Colorado units 54 and 55

I am wondering about putting in for a first rifle hunt in these areas. Are there many elk in these units? I am planning on coming up with my camper and four wheeler next year. Never elk hunted, but I am looking at staying around the west elk wilderness area just nw of gunnison.

.  Yes both units have good

Yes both units have good elk number at over 4000 elk per unit but both units are pretty big. You have a good chance at an either sex first season tag in 54 and for sure can get a cow tag. In Unit 55 you can get a cow tag but it will take a few preference points in unit 55 to draw an either sex tag for first season. Looks like 615 folks put in for the 280 available tags. Check out the big game stats on the DOW web page and you can see all this info. Not sure if you have stayed in the area you mentioned but this is high country and if you have never been up in the area I suggest a scouting trip to learn and live it somewhat.

Ok, so here's a update. I got

Ok, so here's a update. I got the green light from my wife to come out this October and go for a cow, and kinda scout it out. Any suggestions on where to camp? I was gonna stay around south baldy mountain off of co road 723. Or close to rainbow lake. I'm going to be camping out of my truck and back packing in everyday. Just want to get a feel for it and walk in the mountains with my rifle in the hopes that a cow shows herself. I would love to have someone with me but everyone backs out and I'm doing it this year. Only one way to learn.
