Colorado unit 75 3rd rifle season

I am headed to colorado for an OTC 3rd season rifle hunt. I have not hunted the area around Durango and looking for some advice. Anyone know the area and where to start a hunt? We are willing to pack in to get away from other hunters to find the elk.

You going to want to go up behind the lake and around missionary ridge.
Lots of pressure this year and no real snow yet.
Been cold though and the rumor is that its a better class of animals than years before.
I have not heard of anyone bringing anything down though, but I haven't been checking much either.
the ridge is your best chance, especially if your willing to pack in more than the rest.

Thanks for the advice, I understand there has been some snow last night and today so maybe it will get the animals moving. Leaving first thing in the morning, I will give you guys a full report when I get back.

Not sure if anyone is interested, but thought I would update the post with my results. Which is nothing. We seen three bulls the evening before season from the road. Went back to the same area which was the taylor mesa area. The snow that fell earlier in the week was melting and the weather was warming and the animals just were not moving. I did get a chance to see two bulls fighting in front of me well after legal shooting time. Never got another chance at anything else.

Was dissappointed in the area, would not recommend a hunt in the area unless you want to compete with lots of hunters.

Thanks for the update.

That would be a tough tag to fill. 3rd season is usually tough - the elk have usually found their safe places by then. Hunting any area for the first time is difficult and public land is never easy.

If I am reading the statistics correctly the success rate for antlered tags in Colorado GMU 75 was 13% last year. Pretty slim.

I'm pretty amazed that 2 bulls would be fighting so late in the season.
