colorado unit 7

Hey guys, new to the forums. I found out today I drew an elk tag, however not my first choice.

I was wondering if anyone could share some info with me on unit 7?

I have a cow elk muzzy tag, and is looking for a better area in 7. I have hunted there 2 times and seen elk, also seen tons of people. any help wlll be appreciated.

welcome to BGH

Most of us Front Rangers have elk hunted there in the past, but you'll also notice that we're not too high on that unit, especially me.  Let me refer you to some older posts, let us know where you've been and maybe we can help steer you in the right direction.

Just throwing this out there, but you can always return the tag and I bet there will be some cow muzzleloader leftover tags in better units, including some List B units.  Then you could also pick up an OTC bull tag or leftover 4th bull or either sex tag.  Usually a couple of decent 1st season leftover bull tags too, but not a lot.

This is 19, I believe the 7 tag is also good there

You can also use Google to search even further back on this site, these are the only ones I found that are somewhat recent.

But anyway, you can do ok in the Rawahs and the country north of there that isn't in the wilderness area.  Just not a lot of elk, close to 2 per square mile, which SUCKS

I have hunted the north west

I have hunted the north west corner of unit 7, 2 times. ran into elk couldn't seal the deal though. had some friends hunt up there last year and 3 out of 4 of them shot their cow elk. was looking for a better spot, because like you said they are very thin up there.

what?

You're looking for a better spot in unit 7 when you guys are running 75% and the average is about 10%?  You're probably in the best possible spot in the unit.

well that area is really

well that area is really chopped up by roads, lots of road hunters..and they don't get elk every year.

I was hoping that it might be a little better to the south.. how about unit 8?

i guess i am use to hunting wyoming, you can walk for hours and not see a road or any other hunters.

unit 7 is a big unit, so is the north part of that unit better than the south part?

depends

I like the far northern country, but it is a little low, especially for muzzleloader season. One of the biggest bulls I've ever seen was south of there in the Rawahs, but you have to be committed to backcountry camping.

I'm even less of a fan of unit 8 as there's fewer elk and more hunters.  There are localized concentrations throughout 8, and in unit 19 too, but just not enough to interest me anymore.

Frankly, you picked an area with some of the worst elk densities in the state, and it's also a popular unit among local hunters.  If you want a lower pressure season, look at first season in the future.  Muzzleloader overlaps archery, which is incredibly popular amongst the locals.

Hunted there some years ago

Hunted there some years ago durning archery hunting.  Seen some elk and that is were I had my first close encouter with an elk while bow hunitng.....could not close the deal.  If you shoot me a PM I could pass on what little info I had on where we hunted.  One good thing about that unit is it is close to the front range so scouting trips can be easily done.
