Colorado Unit 67 Elk

Hey, newbie here trying to plan a 2009 muzzleloader elk hunt in Colorado. At present time my buddy and I have 5 pref. points. and are going to try to draw in unit 67 next year. If successful it will be my first elk hunt, my buddies 2nd. We are leaning towards the southern tip of the unit near the La Garita Wilderness area, it sounds like tough terrain (especially to a couple of flatlanders) but we do have plenty of time to try to prepare for it. My buddy wants to stay in Creede and then drive to our hunting unit in the mornings.....but I may be able to convince him to camp, especially since there looks to be limited access from the south.

Does anybody have any experience in this area? Is anyone going there this year? I'm not looking for anyone to put us in their hotspot, just a nudge in the right direction. Any input is greatly appreciated,

Thank you,

jayjay

JAYJAY, Thats allot of points to give up for that unit. In 2007 all people with 2 points or more got tags. With that said my friend and I will be going there first rifle season this year. I have a bull tag and he got a cow land owner voucher for $300 bucks. We have never hunted this area before and my first choice was 66. We have been hunting deer and pigs for years but this is only our second elk hunt. There are supposed to be allot of elk in 67 with some good elk 300+ but also allot of small elk. Ill keep you posted on how we do and that might help you decide what to go for next year.

John, thanks for your response. According to the DOW website the minimun number of points for a muzzleloader tag in that unit is 6. Hope to hear the bulls making noise when we're out there.

I wish you and your friend the best of luck this year, hope you shoot a big one Thumbs up I look forward to hearing how you guys do.

Thanks again for your input.

Your so right about the points I don't know what I was reading. We will be up a week early for the first rifle season to scout the area. Most of what I'm hearing is not big secret. The south side along unit 68 and a few mile hike into the wilderness. I got a guy that lives in Gunnison saying sawtooth mountain can be good too but maybe later. Im thinking muzzle loader season they must still be pretty high. Ill let you now what we see and how vocal they are. Good luck with this hunting season and hopefully i can send you some coll pictures in October..

Hey Jay Jay have been in Gunnison for 20 yrs. and know the area pretty well. You should definitely plan on camping as you will double your sleep and effective hunting time. If your buddy won't budge then Lake City is a closer option than Creede. Lastly the La Garita wilderness is an outstanding choice for muzzleloader season as they will still be high and in low traffic areas!

Good Luck!

Thanks Darin, I really appreciate your input. Do you run into a lot of other hunters when you're out there? I imagine the further you get from the roads the less you see. I've also read that its pretty tall country out there, I would prefer to get up there and camp, but its not looking like it will happen on this trip. (sounds like he's nervous about bears and cats) but it will on any follow-up trips Yes No matter, we'll have a good time regardless.

Anyway, thanks for your input, and good luck to you this year Thumbs up
