Hi There, I'm new to this site, but have been reading some posts lately. Me and my buddy have 19 pts each and was also waiting for the N.W. corner but it's never going to happen. Were from Mich. and because were getting up there (age) we have decided to use our pts this year. I have been looking into area # 40. We don't have a ton of money so we are looking into something we could put together ourselves. I was wondering if some of you guys might have some suggestions, all would be appreciated.

Thanks

Rick, I am in exactly the same spot as you with 19 points.  After a ton of homework it appears the best option for a do-it-yourself is Unit 61 with a muzzleloader, or the first rifle hunt.  Unit 40 you need an outfitter to do well.  I have talked to some hard core hunters who have had a tough time in Unit 40 trying to hunt public land.  I personally am seriously considering Unit 61.

I am curious

I am curious, Everyone talks about Co unit 40 and 61 for Elk, but both take a lot of points to draw, how would  unit 62 be  second season for elk ? it is right next to them.

Thanks

Unit 62

Kevin,

Unit 62 is one of the heaviest hunted units in the state. That being said, there have been some big bulls killed in the unit. 2nd season is when it is the busiest when it comes to the amount of hunters and most of the time you litterally have to use your blinker to turn into your camp site. Duh

Thank you

Thank you, it seems like most units in CO get a lot of presure, but is it like a lot of unit to where 95% of the hunters don't get more then 10 feet from there trucks ?. the elk numbers look good there.

Almost all the guys I have met over the years are like me and have been in the unit for 30-40 + years. You will find them in places the elk wont even go ! Yes Then you have the hunters that ride there atv's into places that are not allowed. It is very tough to find a place you will not find another hunter.

To be successful in a unit like this you must know it very well and know what the elk are going to do and where thay will go. Even when you know it so well the elk will do what is least expected and disappear into places unknown. We have always been 85-90 percent successful over the years, but 3 years ago we had 11 tags and did not even fill one cow tag. The first time ever. Confused

As far as elk numbers go, I believe the numbers are not as good as they say. In the last 5 years I think the numbers have started going downhill. They really need to slow down on killing the cows and kill more predators in the unit. To help both the deer and elk !

Hey Quinton, were thinking about making a run over there next week looking for some of the preditors you speek of. I would like nothing more than to help out the Elk population. Were counting on this next storm for some snow. Got any ideas where to look? I dont know 62 very well. We were thinking 61 just because I know where a bunch of bob cats are. Heck if you got nothing better to do come join us.
