Colorado Unit 40

I have been drawn for Colorado Unit 40 archery for elk. I am planning to hunt either grand mesa national forest and or snyder flats. I have topo maps for fish creek and snyder flats. I have never been in this area and looking at the elevations snyder flats looks to be pretty rugged. Has anyone hunted these areas? If so what are your thoughts.

derek1, as for the Grand Mesa NF that is were the bulk of the hunters are going to be , but there are still little places people overlook. The Snyder Flats area is not to rugged until you get over to the North Lobe Cr area and past. The Fish Creek area is probably the hardest to get to even from the top.

jeep trails in unit 40

My maps show several jeep trails on the north side of snyder flats. Does anyone know if these jeep trails can be used by the public? If not is there any North access to the snyder flats area. Thanks for any information.

Sorry derek1 i did not get back to you sooner. I lost my cellphone up on the Uncompahgre and it took me a day and a half to find it! Brick Wall,)

That trail that comes up from Unaweep Canyon is access, you can not drive in from the top, but it is only accessable by 4 wheeler. The terrain in there is rolling hills until you get over by North Lobe Creek and then it gets steep and nasty. You will be in some ponderosa pine, quakies, oak brush, and sage brush.

The NF goes from rolling hills to big flats and then some decent canyons. It goes from dark timber, pines, quakeys, oak brush, sage brush, and some pinion and juniper. Hope this helps. Yes

Elkkill, If we were to go in by four wheeler from unaweep canyon how far of a ride is it to snyder flats? I am not certain which trail comes to 141. We normally backcountry camp. Do you think this would be the right approach to hunting this area? Thanks again.

Derek1, the trail starts right across the from the turn in to Cactus Park. The trail goes about 6 miles and then you have to park and hike in from there, around the private, so it will still almost be like being in the back country.

The only other way to get in there is to hike up North Lobe Creek where the BLM touches the highway.
