Colorado Unit 38 - Allowed to hunt up from East Portal?

Hello,

I saw a post awhile back in the spring about hunting up from the Moffat Tunnel/East Portal. From what I see, most of the unit directly west of the East Portal is in the James Peak Wilderness area and is off limits. Were there other areas accessible from there that hunting is permitted?

Thanks!

Welcome to BGH.
Hunting is permitted in the IINDIAN Peaks Wilderness. However, just north of the Moffat Tunnel/East Portal area is the Boulder City water supply in the Wilderness Area and access is not permitted there. That may be what you are confusing, or I could be totally wrong, which wouldn't be the first time. Big smile
You can access the wilderness area by foot or by horse, just not by car, ATV or mountain bike.

Thanks for help! I was mistaken!

I was going off of this site: http://www.coloradowilderness.com/cowildareas.html which shows the wilderness areas and the GMU's for each one. Oddly it does not list a GMU for James Peak Wildness, and I had thought the area was off-limits for some reason.

Thanks!

Like I said I could be wrong. I had never heard of the James Peak Wilderness Area. I know where James Peak is, and had assumed that it was in the Indian Peaks, which it is not. And that Boulder City Water source is quite a bit further north.
Anyway, I still don't know exactly where the James Peak area is, as it's not on any of my maps. And on my most recent map, it shows there is some private land in that area, which isn't marked on the normal BLM map. You might wanna check it out before you take my word on it.

Alright, edit time:
Found a little picture of the wilderness boundary sign on google earth, just past the east portal tunnel. Apparently it became designated wilderness in 2002. News to me.
So anyway, I'm sure you can hunt it.

Hi,

I just spoke with the Boulder Ranger District, and hunting is allowed in the James Peak Wilderness area (wilderness rules apply, however no camping permit is required). And as an FYI, they mentioned that many other individuals that I'm likely to meet up there might not know that hunting is allowed, and in the past some hunters were verbally accosted etc.

Thanks,

Ned
