Colorado Unit 22

Just kicking around the idea of putting my son in for a 4th season buck tag and maybe an either sex tag for elk, any input would be appreciated. Thanks. Sorry to be that guy asking such questions for his first post. I do have knowledge of other units if you need help.

Welcome to the foums.  You

Welcome to the foums.  You son is going to need at least 5 preference points for unit 22 fourth season deer but he should have no problem drawing an elk tag for that season.

As far as deer go the second

As far as deer go the second and third seasons are much easier to draw needing either 0 or 1 respectively. Pretty much all the 4th season hunts are a tough draw due to less tags as the rut is warming up good and more snow has sometimes arrived.

Looks like they only give 5 tags in the 4th season if I read the statistics right.

Unit 22

4th season buck tag will be verry hard to come by.

4th season either sex, slam dunk.  My suggestion, put in for a pp with your first choice and ee02104r as your 2nd choice.  Your son should draw the tag and get a point.  Then, assuming he is not 17 yet, the es tag can be converted to a cow tag and used in any unit where there is a late cow hunt going on.

Good luck

My son has 6 pp's so I'm

My son has 6 pp's so I'm hoping he'll draw the deer tag. He didn't hunt unit 21 with us last year because he was playing football. After seeing the evidence of the unit 21 hunt he wants a big buck, I usually put him in for doe tags just for the meat and the easier possibility of success to keep the fire burning inside. He killed his first pronghorn buck last year so he figures this is the year for him to finally kill a mulie buck, so we'll see what happens I guess.

It's nice to know that he has

It's nice to know that he has some points to be able to draw that buck tag.  I personally would not worry about a elk tag if he wants a nice buck, and to have him just concentrate on the deer.  Nothing is more aggravating than to see a nice buck while you are packing out an elk without a rifle in your hands or to shoot an elk and then see the buck of a lifetime running over the next hill.
