Colorado Unit 19

Can anyone help me with a good area to hunt 1st rifle season in Colorado Unit 19? I'm planning on packing in to get away from other hunters, but have also found in CO that the wilderness areas get a fair amount of pressure from guides.

That's certainly true in most wilderness areas, outfitters and drop camp clients will be in the most obvious large meadows. The elk hunting in 19 is fairly poor, are you sold on that unit only?

I'm not sold on that area. The past 3 years I've hunted unit 7 along the northern boundary of the Rawah Wilderness with no success. I typically see a great deal of sign, but it appears that there is a large amount of pressure that drives the elk out during the bow/muzzleloader seasons. I live in Northern Colorado and would like an area that is relatively close so I can do some scouting before the season. What units do you recommend?

20 is infinitely better than 19,7,8 or 191. But I've done well in 7. I do like the lack of pressure during 1st season with no cow hunters, but with all the pressure in Shipman Park in the Rawahs the elk do get moved around a bit. However, they are still there during 1st season, but the vast majority of the non wilderness hunters are hunting the northern and eastern boundaries of the Rawahs. I'd either hunt further north in 7, the backside of the Rawahs in 6 (some of the elk leave the Rawahs via Ute Pass, which is a lot more accessible from the west), or the Sheep Creek region in 19. Above the Sheep Creeks in the Comanche Peak wilderness is hunted by an outfitter, but not too many people hunt the logged country below Crown Point road (I think that's the name). It's a gated off old logging road which makes for good still hunting all the way down the Sheep Creek Reservoir (more of a pond) and the big meadow behind it. There's moose in there, but elk are there too.
But in all honesty, all those Poudre Units suck because there just aren't very many elk(they're coming back, but it'll take awhile). It's still a long drive to the Laramie River country in 7 from Ft. Collins, so you might think about 6,16,17,161, or 171.

What areas of unit 20 do you recommend? Is there a lot of pressure since the area is limited due to RMNP? Are the backcountry wilderness areas better?

I've got some favorite place to hunt around 20, but you're local you can find them. I have hunted the wilderness, and I helped a good friend take a real nice bull in a late season just outside the park in a wilderness area. I don't generally elk hunt in 20, just deer when I don't draw, but my partner hunts it almost every year for cows. There is not a lot of pressure, in fact, I'm not sure I've ever seen more than one hunter in any of my spots, and none have ever been exactly where I wanted to hunt. Of course it is limited draw, but the cow licenses are list b, and there are some late seasons.

Thanks for the help. Do you recommend bugling to locate herds and if so can you recommend a call and DVD to learn from?

If you want to learn how to

If you want to learn how to call and situations to call, I would recommend the the elknut videos. I bought them and they helped me as far as calling and which situation to use a certain call. It's all calling, no hunts but it really helped me decipher between elk calls. His instruction is mainly geared toward archery hunting for obvious reasons. But if you are new to elk hunting or need some help with learning how to call, I'd purchase the videos. Good luck

No, I've never found them overly responsive during 1st season. But a guy I know got woken up from a 9:00am nap last year by a bugling bull, which he then shot. Lucky bugger. I suspect if you did bugle at them during 1st season you'd run em off. Only thing I will do is the occasional cow call. I've heard that some of that elknut stuff is pretty good for instructional stuff, but I've never watched, just some of the Primos stuff.

Unit 19 is a good unit if you are willing to do some hiking and get way from everyone else!!! Last season 2009, my hunting buddy took a 313 1/2 and a 309 class bulls. The DOW could not believe it! There were some larger bulls in the 2 herds as well! There were 2 herds of bulls... 7 in each... there are also plenty of nice mule deer... in there as well! My recommendatioin is to get on google earth "maps" and look at the unit. Never underestimate ANY UNIT!
