Colorado Unit 15

Hello, I am planning on hunting Elk in Unit 15 during the 1st Rifle season this year while I build my preference points. I was wondering if anyone out there has hunted that unit and can tell me what I can expect. It is a huge area and any advice on where to start to scout would help. Not looking for a trophy just meat for the freezer. Also, what type of terrian and pressure occur in Unit 15. I have only driven the edges of the unit a couple of times. Thanks!

What season did you hunt? We are doing a deer hunt there with cow elk tags 3rd season. We are looking at the Sarvis Creek Wilderness as our top choice as of this point. Did you see any deer?

Hello Pike. I hunted the archery hunt for elk late september, seen deer everyday. If I had a tag, I would have had a shot at a deer everyday. I seen alot of little deer. One nice 4x4 about 22 to 24 inch, but I did not pay that much attention to the deer, I was elk hunting.

Sarvis Wilderness

Hey getoffthetrail,

where did you enter the Sarvis WA from.  Did you enter from one of the trails through the SWA, if so which one?  My son and I have cow tags for first rifle and this is only our second year hunting.  ANy advice would be great.  What do you think this warm weather will do to the elk?  Have you heard anything about this season's rut?

Thanks

Try a quick site search

Unit 15 is a pretty busy unit in terms of hunting pressure.  There are several good areas from the wilderness area already talked about in other comments to some good drainages south of Gore Pass.  I've already discussed unit 15 in several other threads on this site in the last couple of weeks.  I'd recommend doing a quick search (on the page header) of the forum and check out some of the other posts.

Overall, unit 15 is good hunting but you'll have to work to consistently find elk.  With all the pressure during rifle season the elk are extremely spooky.  The overall elk population density is lower in this unit than other units in NW Colorado too, so you'll want to make the most out of each encounter.

Send me a PM if you'd like more info.  I'm happy to share info on our experience hunting this unit over the years.
