Is there anyone that has hunted the Mt. Zirkel Wilderness area during ther archery or for that matter any of the seasons?
I and some friends are going to be going out there the second week of September this year. I have been going over different maps of the area and the area seems to look good as least on the maps. The area around the dome seems to have good qualities from what I can see as do several other areas just east of Steamboat over to the continential Divide.
I'm not looking for information on someone's honey hole just weather, fires, places to avoid or any other helpful info. I'm still pouring over the maps and have several other more specific areas in the unit I'm looking at but I want to see if anyone would possibly have helpful info first.
Thanks for any help.

I hunted there 3 years ago (archery). Plenty of elk, alot of tough terrain (like everywhere else), and plenty of public land. I was a bit north of where I think you're going (north of Clark). Beautiful country!

I managed to call in a few bulls, one solid 6X6 (who of course wouldn't cooperate enough for a shot). Since I have no intentions of hunting there this year I can direct you to where I was, but with it being a few years I'm not sure how much good it would do.

A vast, rugged & steep wilderness...and for that reason I have to confirm ComoNick's sentiment...GO HIGH!

Other than that...

Weather - Yikes! Mid Sept? Could be burried in a ton of snow already, or could be 90degrees still! Bring everything, the old adage holds so true..."better to have and not need; than to need and not have!" Literally at that time of year & at that elev you may have all four seasons in a single day...EVERYDAY! LOL! Think

Fires - are good and should be plenty of wood around, heavely wooded in most areas ...till above treeline that is cool

Best suggestion...try that one valley, which is that one mountain over, cause there was no one else who hiked quite that far to get to it...you get the meaning! Thumbs up

Guys'

Thanks for the input. Anthing we can get will help us. I'm sure well be east of clark and most likely south of there as well. There are 4 of us and none of us are hard core elkers yet. One the guys has been before but the other 3, it is our first time. I'm sure by the time we get back we'll all be hooked though.
We are planning on going high as long as we can handle it. We sre sll trying to get in shape but I know it most likely still wont be enough. However were going to give our best shot. Good luck to everyone in the upcoming season.

If anyone hears of any new burns or anything about the area, let me know.

There have been 3 fires in the area that I know of with in the last several years. Most of them have been in the northern half of the unit west of the divide near an area that had been blown down not to long ago either.

here are some gps coords
N 40.66176 W 106.78170
N 40.71161 W 106.75381
N 40.81335 W 106.73853

Depending on when you are going the weather can change pretty quickly. I had hunted up in that area 1st rifle and camped out in my sleeping bag, but any later in the season be prepared for a fair ammount of snow; it wouldnt hurt to throw in some chains! I have some knowledge of the area, but have not hunted it; just the units around it and along the border a bit between 5 and 14 for elk and 161 and 14 for deer. If I can help any feel free to send me a pm.

I was in that area in 07 and I will be there this year for the last week of archery.
We were around the seed house rd area which is by Clark. When we were there last time there was a lot of guys with atv's . My best advice is to go the extra mile and to find the areas were you cant take the atv . There was 2 of us in 07 and it took a couple of days to figure it out, but when we did we saw a lot of elk and we filled a muzzle loader tag and 2 archery tags within 5 days.

Guys,
Again thanks for the info.
mntjoe3, I checked the cordinates of the fires and it looks like two of them are only a couple miles away, which is good. Should be alot of new growth; hopefully.
RJ50, I don't think we are going that far west as Clark but I appreciate the offer. Just curious though why you all aren't going back?
Were hoping that with the lack of major trails (actually no trails that I can locate on the maps) in the area of the Dome and Mt. Ethel it will help with not being crowded.
A question for everyone though. I noticed on the GMU Research maps that the summer concentration doesn't cover over to the area of the Dome or Mt. Ethel. The Winter concentration nor the winter range go that far east either. Will the elk be that far east since there is higher altitude? Were planning on being in the area from the 7th to the 12th. Were still not set on the area but leaning there. Getting there might be a problem though.

Go the extra mile, hunt high seeing as how the elk will still be in summer mode. everything these guys said.but at the same time you dont have to go to the tallest mountain around to find elk. Just because there's no elk on the research maps doesnt mean they're not in there. but i would stick with your original game plan and stick with the west side. dont even think about the east side otherwise you'll be wondering "what if" during the hunt if you dont find any elk on the west side. get what i mean? whatever you choose, just be confident in the area you choose to hunt. hope this helps! Good luck this fall! and welcome to the addiction known as elk hunting Thumbs up

Good advice McFly,
The GMU research maps show concentration area, but there are also broad summer ranges that are outlined with a single red line. I haven't looked, but I'd be shocked if most of the National Forest wasn't considered basic elk summer range.
I checked out the Dome, you really don't need to head all the way to that point, and it looks pretty rocky to me.
Many of the major drainages are burned, try hunting those instead, elk love em.
