Colorado Trophy Unit 61 -- 1st bear hunt -- help?

I finally drew my unit 61 black bear tag in colorado and have never hunted bear before. The hunt spans the entire month of Sept. Does anyone have advice on general tactics ie) elevations, vegetation type, times etc that I should look into. Also is anyone familiar with the Uncompahgre Plateau?

Start now. If you can't or are not baiting, speak with a local biologist to find out what food sources will be available in that area come september. You'll want to locate these now, and plan a couple hunts around that. You might want to find some swamps that look promising. If you are not baiting, a predator call would be a good investment or maybe a scent dipenser. Just some ideas. I would strongly suggest starting now though, especially with a short season like that. You don't want to waste your time researching when you'll really want to be hunting. Oh yeah, and if you decide to use a trail cam to do some of your scouting, make sure you descent it. I just recently placed one up on a bear trail, and didn't think to spray it. It wasn't on a bait barrel so I didn't think it would matter. Well I guess it does, because my camera was a part of a taste test. I'm lucky it still works.
Good Luck!

GMU 61

I don't know much about bear in GMU 61 but I hunted elk during MZ season last year in the northern part of GMU 36. Season was early to mid September. I saw four bears, one of them a big cinnamon bear. The bears were very active and I saw them from early in the morning to late afternoon. If I go MZ hunting in that area again I'll get a bear tag. I wish I knew what they were feeding on. DOW biologist can probably tell you what kind of forage to look for in the area you're hunting.

Success!!!

Got my bear. Big chocolate boar. I was there by myself taking some time off from college. Made for a hell of a lot of work but it was worth it!

unit 61 congrats

Congratulations on your bear! I have seen a lot of bear in that area over the years I have hunted there. Unit 62 on the other side of the divide rd. Wondering if you saw many deer and how many other hunters were around. Going Oct. 18 for mulies and just curious. I love that area and it definately produces big deer and elk.

Pic Problems

I can't get pics uploaded. It just sends a message. "No post mode specified"

Danield -- Lots of deer and some really good bucks. What tag did you draw?

no pics

Did I put the pics on wrong? Not the most computer literate person there is. I drew a second season unit 62 tag. I hunt unit 62 almost every year. If I dont draw a tag, I go online and find a landowner tag for deer.

I was talking about pics of my bear that I can't get uploaded. Do you have any idea how to do so?

My hunt group is spliting up for deer and elk for the first time since I began hunting. It sucks. Some of us are sticking with our usual hunt up north of Craig and the others are trying 62 for the first time this year. They are banking on it being a good over-the-counter bull hunt. Is 62 as good for bear as 61 is? Do you hunt elk in 62 or just deer?

To upload a photo: when you are posting your message you will see "add an attachment" at the bottom of the window. Click on the "browse" button to find the photo file on your PC. Then click on "add attachment". If you are on a slow internet connection & your file is large, it may take a few minutes to upload. Then simply click submit to post.

Do keep your overall file size as small as possible, definitely under 1 MB or it simply will not upload.

Oh and welcome to BGH hawkeye270! Big smile
