Colorado s61 Ranching for wild life question

Any one know anything about this hunt? With everything else going on as we will probably draw early elk after 17 years this is the only hunt date that I would be able to do. Mid December into January.

I know the odds are long but I would like to know what the area is like and what the potential is if I got lucky. I have plenty of points so my chances are just as good as anyone elses.

Thanks for any responses.

The more that I hear about

The more that I hear about Colorado's RFW tags the more I don't like them.  My problem with them is that I am hearing more bad than good.  The bad being that they place you into an area that is game poor and take the paying hunters into the game rich areas.  Also the ones that I have looked at require you to check in at the ranch headquarters in the morning when I usually like to be on the stand or where I want to hunt and not just headed into it along with the check out time that is way before I prefer to leave my stand.  The best source that I could tell you to check with is somebody that has hunted that ranch on the public draw tag.  That would give you the best information that you can get.

I know that there are some RFW ranches that do the right thing for the public hunters but I think that the bad ones are outnumbering the good ones.  You could also check the Colorado's RFW's site and see just what the rules and restrictions are for the ranch that you are looking at.

I will go check the rules out

I will go check the rules out as I had not even done that yet. I only looked at the dates and the success in the statistics which has been 100% for the last 3 years with an average of 6-10 days hunted.

I have heard a lot of negative things in the last few years also. I have never used the program and only know one person who has, That being my ex father in law and he was very happy with his hunt. He may have gotten a little special treatment though as he was less than a year recovered from triple by pass surgery and was able to score on his bull the first morning. He was in no way restricted on where he could hunt. But every ranch is different and thats where the problems start.

Here's a picture of his bull.

Dennis DuPont around 04 or 05 I think.

i hear the same thing about

i hear the same thing about these tags.

unfortunately, in our changing world, i fear we have no choice but to pay more dealry for fewer hunting oppertunities.

part of me wants to say "the heck with youth" the more people hunting means less game for me... but that's not right. Silenced

Sorry I didn't see this earlier

Are we talking about Purgatoire?

Steve Wooten, who owns Purgatoire Ranch, and his ranch managers are stand up people.  The conservation organization that I worked for in the past have had dealings with him and some friends have turkey hunted there.  Also, he works with the DOW's Hunter Outreach programs, allowing youth hunts.  No one has anything but good things to say about him.  Also, if you'll notice, the bighorn sheep success there has been 100%.  I'd do it.

Yup that's the one. After

Yup that's the one. After reading quite a bit I came to the same conclusion that you posted here. I have already applied even though like I said it's a long shot. But somebody will get it and the time frame would work out perfect for me.

Thank's for the input though it makes me feel better about the decision to apply there.Thumbs up
