colorado hunting license

I went to buy my Colorado hunting license this past weekend. Is it true I need to know which unit I will be hunting in before I purchase it? Isn't that what what the draw system is for? Maybe the guy at Walmart didn't know what he was talking about? Also, do I need a hunter safety course before I purchase a license or can I take the course after?

Yes and no

Page 2 of the regs book, in bold, states you must have completed a hunter safety course or bowhunter education course before purchasing a license.

But you do not need to declare a unit for an unlimited OTC license, just the OTC licenses with caps.  Among those are unit 25,26 cow tags and the 2nd season either sex 54 tag, and most bear tags.  The OTC either sex and antlerless archery elk, 2nd rifle and 3rd rifle OTC bull licenses do not require you to declare a unit, only a season.

I don't know why they asked

I don't know why they asked about the GMU unit unless you asked to buy a license that is part of a draw.  You definitely need a hunter's safety BEFORE you purchase a license and a hunter safety from any state will do.

Colorado has a really messed up (to say it nicely) resident qualification.  I moved to CO years ago and I already had a CO drivers license, applied for a CO concealed carry, paid employment taxes, paid state income taxes, but could not buy a resident hunting license.  There's a lot of good things to say about the CDOW, but if I had the money, I'd have gone to court with them on it.  I still don't understand how I had to pay state income taxes and be mandated to get a CO driver license in 60 days after moving to CO (because I was considered a resident by the state DMV), but not buy a resident hunting license.  Sorry for the rant.
