I've hunted 74 all but 2 or 3 years since 1993.  I've taken my share of elk there.

I'm interested in your source for the high success rate.  There are a fair amount of elk but I have found them to be distributed over large area and difficult terrain.  Most of my experience has been rifle hunts in the later seasons.  I've seen Colorado overall success tend to be around 25% (fluctuates with weather) with unit 74 tending to be 4% or 5% below the statewide average.

These are some photos of a cow I shot that went a short distance and died on the edge of a big cliff in Unit 74.

It was a difficult location to field dress an elk.  Anything that fell over the edge would take a couple of seconds before it hit the ground below.  Circulatory fluid would freeze into ice on the rock further complicating the effort to quarter the animal.
