Colorado GMU 8

Hey gang, I have a bull tag and a buck tag for 2nd rifle season in Colorado GMU 7/8 for late October. We'll be hunting in 8. I had the same tags last year as well. I was looking for any advice that might be out there. I moved to Colorado from Arizona a few years ago, so have only hunted this area once, last year, no luck, actually didn't even seen too much game in 4 days. I've scouted it about 8 times this summer just to get out a bit and didn't see much, also noticed they are clearing a lot of beetle kill up there off of 80C near and around the Upper Cherokee Park Wildlife area.

I had heard from locals that several years ago they had to "depopulate" the units due to CWD. Now I've heard it is bouncing back some and they are going to manage it differently, hence the fewer number of leftover bull tags this year. I've also looked at the new interactive maps on the CDOW website. What I am looking for is any human beings out there that actually know about how it should be shaping up or what the outlook should be for this fall, or past experiences. I know it gets hit pretty hard due to it's proximity to Fort Collins, which is where I live.

I appreciate any knowledge that can be offered about this unit.

Thanks Everyone!!

First of all, welcome to the

First of all, welcome to the site!  Stick around, introduce yourself, and throw up some photos and some stories of past hunts.

If you are looking for advice on elk hunting in Colorado, you have come to the right place.  I am putting together a DIY hunt for elk and deer, 2nd rifle, next year in Unit 62. I have been picking these guys brains for months.  Someone is sure to have some information on Unit 8 for you.

Best of luck this fall!

I used to hunt in unit 8

I used to hunt in unit 8 durning archery season.  We got into some elk once in awhile.  there is not alot of elk in the unit and the ones that are in small pockets and can be hard to find.  I used to thunt the bull mountain area and from I always heard that during the gun season it can be like a sea of orange.  Durning bow season we hardly saw another hunter.  I think elk will move from that area down lower into the hay fields that are around there if the weather gets bad enough.  I also work with a guy that bow hunts the Upper Cherokke area and he shot a doe back a week or so ago.  He was up there elk hunting last weekend....when I hear how he did I will let you know.  But I have known a few guys that hunt that UCP area have done well.  I think another area that has always looked elky to me is the area between bull mountain the Deadman pass area.  Drove thru there a few times during the season and we always saw some deer and such, but also again alot of hunters.

Thanks GooseHunterJr. I

Thanks GooseHunterJr. I appreciate you taking the time to reply. My neighbor took a 6x7 out of there 4 years ago, but he said that was VERY rare for that unit. Last fall we saw a few bulls hanging up back in camp, so I know they are out there. Either way I'm looking forward to 4 days in the mountains with my good friends, can't wait!!

While bow hunting I was 30

While bow hunting I was 30 yards from a really nice 6x6 and then 25 yards from a 5x5, they were bothnreally nice bulls, the 6x6 never offered a shot and the 5x5 snuck in on me and I did not see him until it was too late.  So yes they are there just a bit harder to find.  If you need any help just ask.  I am not gonna make it bow hunting this year so i have to live thru all you.

Wow, I can imagine that must

Wow, I can imagine that must have been really frustrating to say the least. Was that up in unit 8? This summer I was doing some scouting up there with my wife and we found an area that had a herd of about 40 cows and a few smaller bulls in a meadow. They were there in the middle of the day, it was nice to see because last year I hunted all over that area for 4 days and never saw a single elk or deer in the field. I guess just walk with the wind in your face and hope for the best!!

unit 8

Pretty much everyone hunts either on Bull Mountain or around Deadman Road.  There are a few critters to be had there.  Cherokee Park is pretty good for deer, less so for elk, but I've seen good bulls there too.  I'm pretty sure your tags are all good for unit 7, which I like a lot better than 8, but if you're not willing to get out to 7, I'd hunt either the Green Ridge area for elk or the Sand Creek country for deer.  Either way, if you actually manage to take anything, consider it a huge success.  There's a reason why the success rates are so abysmal there:  Not a lot of game, lots of private land refuge areas, lots of black timber to hide in.

Like I tell everyone else here, consider a new unit, especially an OTC unit or look at the 4th season leftovers for elk.  If you want a deer combo then you're better off staying there.  Maybe focus on deer and consider elk a bonus.

Where to Go

I have never hunted this area before but have a cabin at Red Feathe Lakes and got a 4th rife season buck tag this year. I was wondering where my best chances would be to get a buck in this area in mid november. Do you think by Deadman Rd. would be good or in the Cherokee SWA?

Thanks,

Grant
