yes there are

It's not that the wilderness heavy units have much lower elk densities, though some do, and yet others have higher than average elk densities.  It's that access to those elk is difficult.  It's difficult to cover enough ground on foot and in heavy timber to consistently get into them.

I was actually thinking of unit 70

I scouted unit 81 this year but in talking to guys on different forums there are going to be a few drop camps right where I plan to hunt.  I am from NM and this unit is close.   I was hoping that the high number of hunters would scare the elk into the wilderness area from the north.  I think most of the elk south of the wilderness area cross the state line into NM.  I finally decided to stick to my original plan.

Exbiologist is the is the expert but unit 70 has a high sucess rate which is why I thought about going there without scouting.  There are some small wildreness areas and a lot of BLM land.  I just don't know if that sucess rate is because of hunting on private land.  Thats where you might want to get the info from his page.

Good Luck

shifting my sights on unit 521

EX - I took your advice and started to look at the maps and noticed unit 521 has very few roads and is a wilderness area, I heard eltric mountain is a pretty good area and a moutain called Oil something not sure of its name. I contacted the CDWR and they estimated there is approx 11000 head of elk in this area and unit 53. Do you know this unit at all as far as hunting pressure's?
