Colorado GMU 48

Hi all, I am new to the forum, but can see there is alot of experience and knowledge to be found here. I am a deer hunter from Western NY with rifle, shotgun, muzzleloader and bow. Me and a buddy drew bull and buck tags for muzzleloading in 48. My first time out west, he has been going DIY for 30+ years. We are being packed in with our wall tent and gear by Halfmoon Packing out of Leadville for 9 days. Any advice anyone can give would be great! Definitely high altitude and we plan on being as prepared as we can be for that.

 Thanks!

I am new to the forum, just wondering why I have no replies. Should I have worded it differently or have been more specific? I realize no one is going to tell me exactly where to go to kill an elk but was hoping someone could give me some sort of firsthand info about hunting the area. I am also uitilizing the CDOW website and will be calling soon.

It's a limited unit

You'll have a lot more luck asking about units that get hunted more heavily or is the target of more research.

Thank You ExB. Glad to hear

Thank You ExB. Glad to hear it is not a heavily hunted unit. Can't wait to get out to your beautiful state and enjoy a week in a wall tent and hiking the mtns in search of game.

Sometimes this forum is

Sometimes this forum is annoying. I made a post to you, and it never showed up.

I live in 481 which is the next unit south of 48. I've never hunted 48, because i've never heard any good reports from there, and I know 481 really well. I have been to the area you're going to, but I was fly fishing. I never saw any animals, but I wasn't really looking either. I know nothing about the elk there, but the deer are mostly in the southern part of the unit. When the snow comes they all move into 481. That will be after your ML hunt though. As you know you can hunt 481 for deer too.

Sorry I couldn't help more, but you didn't pick a popular unit. I'm sure there's game there, so work hard on the hunt to find them. The game will be high during ML season, so you have some hard hunting to do to get to them. Rough country.

I'd do some scouting for you, but you got my tag this year.  Bash

Sorry for stealing your tag.

Sorry for stealing your tag. We had 6 PPs and we've applied a couple other years to other units and got denied so we figured 48 was a lock and it was time to go. Thanks for the info. The numbers don't look too bad there so we'll camp as high as we safely can and hunt hard and see what happens. We also will have a truck camper and backpack tents as a contingent in case we have to get mobile half way through.

Be careful of the afternoon

Be careful of the afternoon storms that come up with lightning.

Give us a report on how you did after the hunt. I've always been curious about that area.
