Hello to all. New to the forum. I'm interested in any information regarding mule deer hunting in Colorado GMU 40. My Dad and I drew 1st rifle season (10/23-31/2010). Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!
Welcome to BGH! Congrats on the tags. Are you residents and are you able to scout this summer? Unit 40 has a ton of private, but you can work around it. The deer population has been on a downward spiral for a long time (since the 80's), but there are still some good genes left up there with some decent deer. The deer during that second combined season will be in the heavy oakbrush areas and the bigger bucks will be in the deeper canyons. The season is later this year, but they will not be chasing the does yet.
If you are looking at specific areas you can send me a PM and I can help you out.
Understanding wind currents and thermals in hilly, broken terrain can often be incredibly frustrating. I've found that collecting and storing milkweed seed pods during the late summer has made me a better hunter in the bluff country that I hunt. These little feather like seed dispersers will float on the lightest of air currents and will show you what the wind is not only doing right at you're location but more importantly down range. I like to use the off season to float them...
