Colorado GMU 15 - Please advise

Hey Guys

New elk hunter taking my son during 1st rifle to GMU 15. Plan to scout area couple days before season. I need advice, we have cow tags and not much experience but son is really excited. Thank you for any advice possible. Right now we plan to hike in a bit (2 or 3 miles maybe) and set up camp.

Well Chris, first let me say

Well Chris, first let me say welcome to the site!  I do not have experience in colorado, but there are tons of guys who hunts elk there, and you should be able to get some answers.

Have a great hunt with your son, and be sure to stick around and share some photos and stories!!!

Welcome to the site and

Welcome to the site and sounds great that you are getting your son out hunting. I am sure it will be a good time and a memorable hunt regardless if you harvest an elk or not. First year my son hunted with me is a memory I will never forget. We saw one elk the whole trip. As for unit 15 I only hunted it twice but that was over  25 years ago. We hunted near the Lynx Camp Ground north of CO Hwy 134. I know it is not much help but it is a start. We did see elk each trip and got a spike the one year. Could have had cows each year but no tags as they were hard to get 25 years ago. Also go on the DOW web site and pull up the inter-active maps or the map atlas. It is pretty detailed and has good contour maps to help with your scouting.  Good luck and welcome, let us know how you do.

Unit 15

Pilotandy -

I hunted the area around radium as a colorado newbie a few years ago 2nd or 3rd season and was disappointed by the crowds and high number of 4wheelers on the ridges right around radium.  If you're going first season, might not be so bad, though but I'd imagine you'd want to get up higher..

As I recall though, I did find some solitude (and plenty of elk sign) NNW of radium up closer to the gore pass summit south of 134. There's at least one or two spur trails off FS 206 closed to motor vehicles that run in an south-easterly direction.  I followed one of these trails back about 4 miles.

Brings back a great memory of how that hunt ended.  Its my last day and I'm coming back down to my truck well after dark.  Pitch black but a snow covered trail and easy walking.  Just as I approach my truck, a flashlight in my face.  DOW officer.  Female.  Mid 20's.  Blonde.  Chaps.  Cuter than "a bugs ear" if you know what I mean.  She and her partner, mid 20's, brunette, also easy on the eyes, had just finished loading there horses after a day on patrol.  Wanted to see my license and tag.  It's somewhere in my pack.  Can't find it.  Start sweating.  She's holding the flashlight as I take every single item out of my pack and go through every pocket and sleeve in the thing.  Finally find them.  She's satisifed.  Flashes me a smile and takes off.  Didn't see a shootable animal all week but this encounter certainly left this old dog with a big ol' silly grin.  Laughed the whole way back to camp.  DOW could do a great calendar with those young ladies!Thumbs up

good luck!

DOW officer

Sounds like Becky and a friend. She's OK. Stay on the right side of the law and you'll have no problems. She was with a tall DOW dude this year. Watch you P's & Q's.
