I'm looking into an Elk hunt in 2012. I'm trying to understand each state's system for getting a tag and it becomes a bit confusing as each state is different. Now I'm looking at Colorado. I'm looking at unit 81, in the south central part. It appears that in unit 81 that the best way is to get an Over the Counter Tag, Is that right? Most states have a lottery system but this doesn't seem to be the case in Colorado. Could someone explain Colorado elk tag system. I'm looking at rifle hunting. Thanks for any replys.

Colorado isn't that hard to understand, it is just a little bit complicated.
Unit 81 is a over the counter bull tag unit except for the 1st rifle season which you would have to put in for in the draw. The second and third season are unlimited rifle tags or tags that you can buy over the counter. If you plan on hunting Colorado in the future and want another unit or a hunt in the 1st season which usually begins around the start of October you should put in for a preference point in the draw which is done in April since all of the early hunts require a preference point or multiple points to draw a tag. Also if you want a cow tag you will need to put in for the draw for the season that you want to hunt. The last published data that I have looked at says that 0 points are required for a cow tag for the third or fourth season but 1 point is required for the second season.
