Hey crazy I guess I'll be hearing from you in about 3 months, look forward to it. congrats on the tag!! My wife put in for the new RFW ranch in unit 40 with 14 points, there were 13 others with 14 and 17 people with 15+ the 3 tags went to people with 18 points , this is getting nuts, I guess she burns them on a 6 point hunt somewere.Good news is I drew my 66 bull wilderness hunt for the third year in a row YEA!! Thanks Guys. I am really excited about this tag. All the input and help from you all is very much appreciated. Exbiologist,Craig,Derek,Elkkill. I have been wearing out Google Earth looking at N.E. slopes, water holes, drainages that look good. I bought BLM maps a few months ago and been overlaying them with topo maps to get boundaries and waypoints since there is so much private land. All you guys are great and hopefully I will have pictures and a good story to share come Sept. Craig, I hope we can put those horses to use. I was wondering how many tags they had for the RFW in unit 40 since this was the 1st year.I could not find anywhere in CDOW website how many were going to be available for Colorado res. Looks like in the near future it will take 20 PP to get a quality tag banghead . I'm way to old for that. Good luck to all of you and be talking soon. Bill Thumbs up

Ooo boy, that's only a 5 day season. Does Momma get the first few days in 40, or do you guys split up? Think

We were going to go for my moms cow first, before everybody starts pushing the elk of the national forest to private!!! We know were some elk are on the mesa that love to stay in a little draw and not many hunters push the elk out. So we know that the elk on the mesa will still be there for a little while, I should still have a good oppertunity at getting my first elk, We were going to go scouting this weekend in unit 40 so I will tell you guys how it turns out. Im super excited for the elk hunts too, so I will tell you guys how it turns out when the time comes, Good hunting to everybody that drew out Thumbs up

Also I was wondering what you guys think about the 308 for elk ? I have a 308 and am shooting excellent out to two hundred yards with nosler partisions in a 165 grs, Do you guys think this will do the job on my elk ? thx again for all your answers!!!

Crazy ,The RFW unit 40 they only had 3 tags, had I known that I wouldn't have botherd with it. She could have drawn the early 76 with 11 pp this year, maybe next year or a 61 black powder hunt. The private land would have been nice but these other hunts we can scout all we want and thats most times almost as much fun as the hunt.I guess I just got lazy because on a lot of the RFW bull hunts they guide you so you can get your bull and get out so they can go back to their paying clients, just wanted to try it once and it would have been nice to hunt 40 min from the house. So it's DIY public land till I die !! Moss buck that 308 is just fine for elk but my comfort zone would be 250 to 300 yards for elk but then thats my personal max range for any rifle.Good god if you cant get any closer than that then its time to go home.Work on your hunting skills, learn from the archery guys an you will find that 80% of your kills can and will be under 100 yards for any game.Good luck and have fun it's great to hear that the whole family hunts together.

mossbuck35,
Stay within your comfort zone and you will do fine with your setup. Its to bad that your families tags got you split up (makes it very tough), but good luck on your hunts. Thumbs up
Also the gates may not be open until the 1st of June.

rcryan,
The RFW on the park is a joke when it comes to the three resident bull tags or even the cow tags(unless you fork over some big $$$). If you hunt on Mountain Island Ranch you will not be allowed hunt just anywhere and they will put you out of the way of the good spots and the paying costumers. Kings Ranch is a little better, but with the bull tag in hand he will make sure you are not in his best spots either. Censored

Hey Quinton- Do the Mountain Island and King Ranch boys give a hard time to hunters useing th MS road to get to BLM? I know they can not stop you, but heard becaus they get so much money from their clients they tend to hassle other hunters. I ran into that problem 2 times in New Mexico 10 years ago. I checked with the warden befor our hunt to confirm roads we could use and got the ok. When we started using those roads we were met with irate land owners with cameras trying to convince us we were tresspassing and the area we were trying to get to was land locked. When I gave them the name of the warden and his phone # they left us alone. Wonder how many times they turned hunters away by scare tactics? I try to do all my homework months in advance, and if I am unsure, I just stay away.
