Colorado Cow Elk GMU?

i am going to apply for an elk tag for the 2014 season and wanted to see about getting some feedback on good GMUs to go after. i am a resident with zero preference points and id drive to pretty much anywhere in the state but want to stick to the mountains, not the plains.

does anyone have any suggestions on GMUs to go for? i have been reading the 2013 recap to see how many points it took for a resident to get a cow tag in some units around Routt County and then also down south in the Montrose area, and there are some i seem like i could have a shot at even with no points.

i would not be using a horse or any atv - i would just be trying to drive in as far as possible then set out on foot.

any feedback, information or suggestions would be welcome. thank.s

Grand Mesa Units

The Grand Mesa units (41, 411, and 421) have good numbers of elk and you could draw the tag very easily.

thanks for the feedback, the

thanks for the feedback, the tags definitely look like an easy draw. do you know anything about the accessbility of the terrain out there, or the pressure it gets? ideally i will be car camping and just hiking in early and out late. sorry for the multiple questions.

Grand Mesa Units

The access is very good with a liberal amount of pressure. There are still areas to get away from people.

Send me a PM if you want specific areas.

cow elk harvest statistics

Look at the harvest statistics for 2012 and see which units had the better cow harvest and success rate.  The numbers may help you figure out which units might be better options.  http://wildlife.state.co.us/SiteCollectionDocuments/DOW/Hunting/BigGame/Statistics/Elk/2012ElkHarvestSurvey.pdf
