Colorado Cold Front Ducks

Well this morning was an exciting morning. We got down to our spot right on time, the snow was flying and the clouds were low and heavy. As soon as daybreak was upon us the ducks started flying like crazy. We managed to down 2 mallard drakes and a GW teal drake. We crippled a few more but couldnt find them in the thick cattails.

At around 8:30 we heard a loud crash and saw dirt flying on the highway behind us. A mini van had rolled several times into the median. All 3 of us rushed to the scene and somone else had also stopped. They flipped the van back over and the mexican lady was in shock but not hurt at all, she couldnt speak a lick of english to thank us or anything. After the state patrol arrived we headed back to our blind winded but alot warmer then we were.

We waited it out another hour or 2 but didnt down any more ducks. We shot lots and had a great day. If it was for all the comotion on the highway with the sirens and such we would have proabaly got a few more.

Here's a few pictures it was wet and cold and neither of our cameras were cooperating.Very good looking ducks if i had the money they would have went on the wall not in the freezer.

You can see the lights off in the distance thats how far we had to run to help with the accident.

Chester I never realize just how freaking crazing we are until I find myself in the cattails before sunrise when it's -15°F below zero in NE Montana in early December and the only open water are a handfull of warm water soughs. The hunting is great, but damn it's cold. Nothing like slowly watching a blued shotgun turn pure white from frost within an hour. lol

It's nice to have a good reason to get up and move around to warm up. Unfortunately in Alpine Archers situation it was an accident.

We had another little cold snap over the past few days. We went out saturday morning to our usualy spot and it was iced over. It was so cold the river was nuthing but an ice flow and we were only able to put my 6 fold out decoys out on the shore along with my Mojo teal. It was a pretty good day and the ducks were loving the mojo in the foggy conditions. On several occasions the sky was full of mallards dive bombing us. It was like nothing I've seen before.

I'm fairly new to waterfowl hunting and the site of the birds deocying in masses like that was unreal. We only were able to shoot 2 birds though but LOTS of ducks we're flying. no dog so it limited the shots we were able to take.

A pic of the river.

Yes Headed back out in the morning. This storm has really brought some snow with it. We've got about 6 inches and snow in the forcast for the next week. Hopefully the ducks will cooperate, I'll be posting the outcome tomarow when we return that is if we make it there with these road conditions.

The roads were shit the trip will be posponed untill the plow drivers can do their job. Between carbondale and glenwood springs there was 14 inches of snow on the highway. The road had not been plowed since yesterday. We made it about half way and decided to turn back for home. The snow was just getting worse , we might try to make an afternoon hunt out of it. sad

EDIT

Well they never cleared so we decided to go to our local fly fishing spot near the house. It was snowing pretty bad still and we were able to jump shoot a mallard drake that was with about 10 others. I managed to fall into the river chasing after the duck but I did get him. We left shortly after that and only shot once and got one bird. Might try our usual spot in the morning if the roads get beter.

BOTH! And I know from VERY first hand experiance! Bout died once when it was 14 below and I was sucked under in chest deep water! Luckily I was only a couple of hundred yards from a warm truck, with dry blankets! ...being with a Doctor didn't hurt either!

You be careful!

Yea luckily I was only in a little deeper than knee deep water and i had my wader belt sinched tight. My hands were so cold when we got back. Needless to say I wont be hunting that spot without a dog again Yes . That spot was only 2 mintues from my house, I try to make better shots in our usual spot but its tough going without a dog.
