Colorado Bighorn Sheep S51 Rifle Tag

I drew a coveted ram tag this year.  I have been scouting the unit with little luck and could use some help.  Anybody out there able to help?

congrats!

And welcome to BGH.

Not a lot of public land down there. I'm not even sure I've ever even seen sheep there.  Maybe check out the old kill sites.

Glancing at the kill sites, it seems everything is on the Purgatoire and Cucharas Rivers.

Sorry, can't be of more help than that.

Congrats on that tag! Not personally familiar with the unit but I might know someone who is. I'll PM you if I can get ahold of em.

Hey kevin...looks like we are

Hey kevin...looks like we are the lucky two!  First season.  I have talked with Sangre De Cristo outfitters and they will be up there while we are.  I am not using a guide.  Are you?

We have a limited amount of area and I dont want to be stepping on toes.  PM me and lets talk.  I have covered the entire unit on foot so far from Mt. Quatro to Teddy's Peak.  Lets compare info.

I sent him an email and got

I sent him an email and got his automated "out of office" email. It says he won't be back until late August... not sure what that's about. I'll try and track down another way of contacting him. What are your season dates?

that's where i'd start. to the north east of west spanish peak. right now, with the hot weather, you need to scout very high altitude spots with water and shade. they will use the rocks and trees for shade. so the entire treeline is what i'd be looking at right now. and there's lots of tree line!

last year, there was still some snow at the top in the beginning of june, but melt water runoff and pools is good to look for when you're up high.

it might even be a little easier this year since it's been so dry? maybe?
