Colorado Bear

Who else got their tag this year for bear? What method do you plan on using to hunt?

I'm going to still hunt into berry bush areas, and try and get one feeding. If that fails I might try calling, but i've been warned that's a bit dangerous when hunting alone. We'll see.

That September hunt is a hard

That September hunt is a hard hunt but it is doable.  The last time that I had that tag I would be in a location where I could watch a couple of medows about a hour before sunlight and then come back to the same area about a hour before dark.  We would see a few bears but nothing that we wanted to go after.  It is also kind of funny that when you have that tag how few bears you usually end up seeing but talk to any person that is archery hunting deer or elk and they will tell you that they are seeing bears every day.  I guess that is the way it goes at times.

If you plan on calling make sure that you have a good size rock or tree behind you where if a bear comes in from behind you'll see them.  A friend of mine was calling in coyotes one time and had a mountain lion come up right behind him within 5 feet and he never knew it.  After that he started to use a large rock or tree just in case.

I am still debating on whether or not to get a ML bear tag to go with my elk tag but I doubt that I will.  It took too long to draw that elk tag to spoil it by thinking about a bear.

Funny you should say that

Funny you should say that about the elk. I have an elk tag which is right in the middle of the bear season. I want to give the bear hunt 100% of my focus. I'm seriously thinking of giving up the elk tag.

As for calling bears? It's even worse for me. I'm blind in my right eye, and it's hard for me to see anything on my right side. I have to almost turn around which is hard when sitting down. I think instead of cold calling a bear i'll wait until I spot one in the distance, and try to call it in. At least i'll have a general idea in which direction it's coming. To be honest. I really don't want to call one in. I want to get one still hunting. It's how I hunt deer and elk. It just seems right to do the same with bear. Good thing I have a whole month to get it done. Big smile

I will be hunting bear in

I will be hunting bear in unit 45 with a rifle.  I have an either sex tag.  I picked it up to go with my elk and deer tag.

2 years ago I had a giant color phased bear walk right in front of us at 50 yards while archery hunting elk.

Bears deserve more respect

Bears deserve more respect than that. Bears are a hard hunt, and it should be a dedicated hunt for them.

Got some nice pictures on an

Got some nice pictures on an old logging road of a young bear, mama with baby (off limits) and a nice big color phase. I am hoping the giant comes around as I am spot and stalk hunting, or still hunting. I love bear meat and need to stock the freezer for the winter.

I don't like to use any aids

I don't like to use any aids like cameras. I like the challenge of finding game on my own like was done by our forefathers. Muzzleloader sidelock, open sights, no optics at all, and my wits.

That's me though. It's not for everybody.

My bear hunt starts Sat. It looks like dry weather for the first few days anyway.
