Colorado Area 61 Archery Elk?

After 11 years I'm ready to put my preference points on Area 61 in Colorado.. (resident).  However, I've never hunted in this area.. and area 61 looks big!

I'm a 61 year old avid archery hunter.. in good shape.. I'm interested if anyone with experience could help me get orientated for this hunt.

* could you advise for the archery hunt what might be the best areas to focus on in unit 61?

* could you advise a good camping area that might work during the archery hunt.. and which i might try during a scouting trip?

* Is this unit good right at the start.. as well as thru the season... ?

* If i was to choose a hotel over camping... is there a reasonable location to consider?

Appreciate your thoughts and advice.. thank you.

regards,

Unit 61

jkem,

I would focus on the areas from the middle of the unit south. There tends to be more elk just because there are bigger drainages that are harder to get into.

Depending on where you decide to look into you can camp anywhere along Divide Road. Which will allow you to go any direction if need be.

It can be decent in the beginning depending on if you have a bull picked out and know his routine. Like anywhere it is usually better the later in the season.

I would not waste the time of driving and waking up earlier to get into the area. It would be better to stay on the mountain.

Unit 61 Archery Elk.

Quinton.. Thank you sir for the information.. I've just ordered a topo map of the unit.. so i'll be able to get a better feel and understanding of your comments..  Once I have the map and study it, I hope it will be okay to come back to you with a few more questions.. It's really appreciated.

Come on back !

Jim,

More than happy to help you out. I would prefer a PM with specific areas.
