About to hunt the late season for area 41 near Rifle, CO and looking for some advice on the herd up there if anyone has hunted the area or nearby. We will be on foot and packing in for the week, any input would be greatly appreciated.
A co-worker just returned from the 2nd season from there. They did not have any luck. Weather was too warm. Game Wardens said the area had been pretty slow since it was between seasons and to warm. The whole state needs some snow bad. Until some snow falls the elk are going to stay in the high meadows and dark timber. So look high as possible.
If you want to properly preserve velvet antlers, you will have to inject & brush them with formaldehyde or some of the new less toxic chemicals (4 in 1 solution works great as does Knobloch's antler in velvet tan) as its easier to use however, both will work.
