Colorado Archery Elk Planning

Been pretty quite here lately so thought I would post something up!

So I'll be heading out to SW Colorado for archery elk next month and trying to plan which week to go. What do you take into consideration when planning your hunt time? Moon phase, opening weekend, last part of the month during the rut or.....?

Myself, I prefer the last two

Myself, I prefer the last two weeks of the season over the first two.  It opens on the last weekend of August this year which is also labor day weekend which means the last camping weekend for the most part and a lot of people out in the woods with all their toys.  Then the rest of the week a lot of them will still be out there with their archery tags.  Then comes the muzzle loader hunt right in the middle of archery season and more hunters.  That is where I like the latter part of the hunt.  The last few years that I hunted with a stick and string I saw very few other hunters and the ones that I did see seamed to be more dedicated to the hunt rather than to the party that usually goes on earlier in the hunt.

I never have worried about the "rut", the bulls will be chasing cows all the way into October and usually are call shy by the second weekend of September.  They will be talking but don't expect one to come into a call unless you are in a real romote site or it is a young small bull.

Amen. Last two weeks. Get away from the crowds so you can hears some at least. They may not come to your call to easy but they will be easier to locate.
