Colorado archery elk hunt recommendations

I have been hunting Colorado unit 75 and 751 in the 3rd season for mulies for a few years now. Me and my buddy are planning an archery elk hunt in 2008 and would like some recommendations on anything anyone is willing to provide. I usually hunt around the spring creek area for mulies but, was planning to hunt Elk around the Vallecito lake area or Beaver meadows. Any and all information would be greatly appriciated.

send that exact message to the DOW in Durango, they will answer specific questions, always have.

if you ask 'where in 74 can i find elk' they will say the whole area has elk, but if u say this spot this spot and this spot are where i am looking on the map to go, which is best in this season?...they will give you real recommendations.

uh huh. been there done that, hunted out of south fork twice, looked mroe like a ATV OHV rally...that was muzzlle season/draw, and the rifle season 3rd, was even worse as snow put everyone in the same areas...never minded ATVs and OHVs until that hunt, now i hate them.

better off trying to draw somewhere or find a unit with limitations on where and whenthe SEA of ATVs are allowed in ...a line of headlights at dusk that went all the waaaayyyyy back upppp....must be what its like to hunt in a New Jersey shopping Mall parking lot...

Oh well

To each their own, but Ive never even seen another hunter in the area I hunted, let alone any atvs. South Park is a VERY heavily hunted area. The southern San Juan is NOT.

I hunted San Juan Range in '06 and going back for archery season this year, lots of elk, and not alot of hunters as said above.

I'm planning on being in southern Colorado early archery season. Can anyone tell what to expect as far as bugs, ticks, chiggers, skeeters, poison ivy, and poisonous snakes go? Not that it makes any difference, just curios.

Thanks

Steve

Some rattlers, you'll have to keep an eye out for them, unless you're over 10K. We get skeeters, if it's wet. Don't trust the water, can be some nasty stuff in it, eventhough it looks clear as crystal.

Thanks for the info hiker.
I'll keep an eye out for them.
I've already had my lesson on water. Lessons I guess. Had a 16 hour drive home with that crap... then it lasted 2 months. I don't know if I just got a smaller dose the 2nd time or my body built up immunity but it only lasted 2 weeks and wasn't nearly as bad.
sad

Would just like to clarify that I got it from a spring in WV that we had drank out of since I was a kid. Both times. The spring water is ok as long as it hasn't been raining then runoff gets in there. Just so people don't think I'm stupid.

The Vallecito area is rougher than a cob. I've had marginally good success when we've hunted around Lemon Lake and Groundhog Reservoir. Still alot of elk running around down there.
