Congrats djmtwood!

I didn't draw any of my top three elk choices. I'll be in the same area I hunted the last two archery seasons. But I'm really getting to know the area so this might be my lucky year. Drew a blank on all my deer picks too. Looks like another lack luster season for me.... once again. Hopefully next season will be better.

Watch your PM's for some info. Don't know if you're going to hunt the area I'm going to tell you about but it may be worth looking at if you draw a blank elsewhere. It's worth scouting this area. I expect a full PM report if you happen to do well in my spot.   Wink

Thank you Bob for responding

Thank you Bob for responding to my post. Sorry to hear you didn't draw any tags. Did you apply in area 76? I am assuming that you are a resident. How many points does it usually take for a resident to draw in 76? My brother and I will be going Sept. 15-23. I'll keep an eye on my PM's and thanks for any info you can provide. I will definately keep in touch with you if we hunt near any of your areas!

76 Archery

Yes, I'm a resident. I had 76 archery down as my first choice. My 2nd and 3rd choices were RFW cow tags. I knew the odds of drawing any of these were slim at best.

Forgot to mention... the area I outlined in my PM is all wilderness. You can only drive on the main dirt road to the turn around. I think horses would be great in here. But I wouldn't know who to contact for that. Something you might consider looking into.

I remember reading a Colorado Outdoors magazine article about a CO DOW sting operation in this same exact area that happened back in 2006. Seems the numbers and quality of elk attracted some out of state elk poachers to this very spot. They bivy camped in the trees and used bows. Sounds like they did real good too. Right up until they were confronted by DOW wardens.

My first experience here was back in 2008 while traveling through this area to hunt the adjacent GMU. The boundaries are very close to where you park. It's a major elk migration corridor. If you hike to the top of the pass and check out the areas just west of the main trail you'll see what I mean. The elk sign is undeniable. Ever since then I've wanted to hunt there. Maybe I'll get my chance next season.

Got your PM. Thanks. You've given me some great info. Will definately check it out. A good friend of mine has a friend who lives in Gunnison and muzzleloader hunted this area 3 years ago. He has also offered a lot of info. He knows the area north of Creede. Between the two of you I've got a good starting point. He may also accompany us during the hunt and has horses. Can't wait! Three and a half months to get in shape. Thanks again, it is really appreciated!

Good luck, dj! I hope you have a successful hunt. I would enjoy seeing some pics of the area as I probably will never hunt this unit.
Good luck & good hunting!

76 archery hunt

Didn't kill a bull but had several close opportunities. Terrian was very rugged. I lost 9 pounds in 6 days! Called in 9 bulls within 50 yards(3 of us hunting) but because of wind or brush no shots.4 of these bulls were 6x6 that all would have scored over 280-290, one of them maybe 320-330.Weather was great, 9/16-9/23.Camped in east end of wasson park, elk were all at the west end, about 3 miles away. After 3 days we moved camp to the west end of the park and were in the elk every day.Had a great time, learned a lot(our first archery hunt). Now that we kind of know the area wish we could go back but that will take us about 12 preference points so probably will never get the opportuntiy to hunt htis area again.
