Colorado Archery Elk Area 76

I will be hunting in area 76 this fall Sept. 15-23 and would appreciate any help members could provide. Have more than enough points to draw archery tag and would appreciate any help in choosing an area in the unit. Not sure if we are going to camp or hunt out of town at this time. Undecided if we will rent horses.

Unit 76

djmtwood,

I can't help you with an area, but I would suggest camping as opposed to staying in town and driving further.

Thanks, I think we are

Thanks, I think we are leaning towards camping. Should be fairly nice weather that time of year, but you never know!

Just curious... how do you

Just curious... how do you know that you drew a GMU76 archery tag? They haven't released results yet. Huh?

I would say that he possibly

I would say that he possibly has 6 or 7 points when he said that he has more than enough to draw a tag and per the statistics it should only take 4 points.

I is a lot like my deer hunt in unit 44 this year.  I have 6 more points for it than should be necessary to draw the tag.

I screwed up when I looked at

I screwed up when I looked at the points.  For some reason I read elk and thought deer so I looked at the deer points.

Elk require 7 for a resident so like you said with 14 you should be garanteed a tag and even a non resident 14 points should get you in.

14 points... woah. If it were

14 points... woah. If it were me and I had that many points I would have applied for another/better GMU. I say this because I have the minimum points for GU 76 archery and that was my 1st choice.

Tell you what... I have GPS coords for a couple of secluded wallows in 76 that hold elk well into October. If I don't draw maybe I'll PM you.  Wink

I have kind of narrowed down

I have kind of narrowed down a couple of areas to hunt. North/nortwest of Creede or around Spar City, south/southwest of Creede. Anyone have any knowledge/experience in this areas?

archery tag

Was lucky and drew area 76 archery tag. Plan on going the last eight days of the season. Was wondering if you were successful in drawing.(Bob Layton)
