Colorado archery elk

Hello everyone,

I'm new to this site and new to hunting in general. I'm trying to do my homework for archery elk this year and I'm currently planning a week long hunt during archery season for elk. I'm looking at the GMU 7 that includes 8,9,19 and 191. My hunting buddy and I already have a campsite set up there and hope to make this area work. I would like to start scouting asap but really have no idea where to start. I've reado some about bull mountain, upper cherokee etc but really have no clue where to start. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help.

Steve

Units

I could be wrong but I thought those units are not OTC archery units. You have to draw to hunt them wich usually means you have to have points. I'm still new to CO so I could be wrong, but if I'm wrong I'm sure someone will correct me. Good luck and welcome to the site.

Those are draw units but just a little over half of the allotted tags are taken in the draw so that leaves quite a few as leftovers.

I can't help you for the areas to look at but as for scouting I wouldn't even start to get out into the hills until July even if there isn't any snow on the ground. Elk move around a lot and where they are next week isn't going be where they are at in September.

Easy draw

They are limited units, but easy to draw.  I think you're putting the cart way before the horse if you already have a campsite located but then want to know where to scout.  The elk can be pretty widely scattered across those units, and are in pretty low densities.  However, there are some good bulls running around there in the timber.  I prefer to hunt as high as possible in the early seasons and you can do that in 7 or 19, somewhat high in 8, not so much in 191 and 9 is all private except for Red Mountain and I think you already missed the draw fro that.

Let me clarify, we have a campsite because my friend's father owns property in 191 and they have a 5 person trailer set up that we will be using for the week. The archery draw has to be in before April. We had planned to put in for this area and if we don't get it we can do OTC for another area. This will just change our camp plans but I have cousins coming from Tennessee and want to do everything I can to increase our odds.

I wouldn't worry too much

I wouldn't worry too much about drawing a tag in this unit. Last year there were 1000 tags offered for archery with 576 hunters putting in for it as a first choice and 414 as a second choice which still only adds up to 990 sold tags.

But perhaps that should tell you something like access problems or problems finding elk.

I would like

Start at Deadman and work towards Green Ridge or Green Mountain. It is one of the 2. They have been doing some burns on Green and it is quite dense. There are a ton of Moose up there so be careful! Elk density is not great and they seem to move quite a bit. Once you locate them, you should be o.k. Lots of drainages and a bunch of trails that will not be marked on your map. Spend a lot of time up there this Summer. It is a neat area. I come in through Wyo or from the South at Deadman Tower.
