My father (a 67 yr old Vietnam Vet) and I will be participating in the 2nd Rifle Season elk hunt in Colorado's GMU 55 here in a couple of weeks. We are from the east coast and will be traveling in for the hunt. Our base camp will be in Mt. Crested Butte. I've researched Colorado's Hunting Atlas as well as read up on the CPW Elk Hunting University. I've picked out a few potential spots to hunt in the unit but would like to get feedback from someone who's familiar with the GMU. I would also like to ensure my understanding of elk habits is correct in relation to their movement based on weather, available food, etc. We were both drawn for cow tags so we're strickly hunting to fill our freezers. Both of us have trained for this trip as we're well aware of the high altitude and rough terrain features associated with this unit. Thanks in advance for any help provided! I really would like to make this a trip of a lifetime for the old man!!!
