Colorado 2nd. rifle season

Hi Folks,
From looking at Colorado's website it looks like tags are available for elk OTC for second season statewide. Even for areas like the Weminuche Wilderness Area. Am I reading this correctly? I'm hoping to hunt in the San Juan or Rio Grande forests in 2009 on a drop hunt or DYI. Is it really tough to kill a bull during second season?
Thanks for any info you can offer!

That's incorrect, sort of. The OTC bull tags are available for most of the state during 2nd and 3rd rifle seasons. There are pieces of units that touch the Weiminuche Wilderness, but unit 76 is the primary unit and it is draw only, and it will take many years of preference points. Basically, the Front Range is crowd controlled, Poudre Canyon(7,8,9,19,191, leftovers available, but not a great unit), St. Vrain (20) Powderhorn (66,67), Weminuche (76), Glade Park (40), half the Uncompahgre (61), and the northwest corner (1,2,10,201, etc) are out, plus maybe few others. Still, lots of country outside of those place to hunt.

2nd and 3rd season otc tags

I have the same question. So as i read the rules and try to understand you can buy over the counter tags. IF there are left over tags in only the certain units that have left over tags. So next year if a buddy and i who are in the military and dont have any points. IF we want to rifle hunt we could wait see what tags are left over and buy online for which every area are open.

Re: 2nd and 3rd season otc tags

yeah you can wait till the leftover list comes out, check and see if there is any tags in an area you would like to hunt. If there's no tags left over in an area you would like, then you also have the option to just buy OTC and go hunt in any area that is open to OTC tags. check the CDOW big game brochure

OTC and leftover tags are two entirely different things. OTC tags are unlimited in quota, leftover tags are whatever is leftover after the draw

here's the link to the part about OTC.
It's under the bold heading UNLIMITED RIFLE ELK
