Colorado 2nd choice units for bull elk

I'm planning on getting another preference point for elk this year in Colorado and will have to go with 2nd choice. I'm planning on 1st rifle season. I've hunted 54 in the past but it seems like a long shot to get 1st rifle either sex as 2nd choice. I'm looking for the best chance at a good bull. I'm willing to hike in deep into rugged country and stay there as long as it takes. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best chance at the best bull as a second choice unit on public land? Or should I just wait for 2nd season and go OTC?

For a tag during the first

For a tag during the first rifle season as a second choice you are going to have to hit the lottery I believe.  If there are any tags left for a second choice then I would be willing to guess that the unit will be made up of 90% private property.

You need to go to the Colorado Parks and Wildlife web site and start going over the statistics page

The only 1st rifle tags as a

The only 1st rifle tags as a 2nd choice will be cows. 55 would work.

The other option is to grit your teeth, and take a 2nd rifle OTC. I'd do the cow before doing that.

I did this last year and drew 2nd choice cow. Unfortunatley, I had to return tags as my wife was still recovering from cancer.

Good way to get a pp and learn the area.
