CO Unit Help Appreciated?

Hello,

I'm new to this site and was hoping someone could help me with some Colorado hunting unit advice. I'm thinking about buying a landowner deer tag to hunt in units 35 & 36 or units 41,42,421.

Could anyone answer the following about any of these units.
1. Which unit offers the most public hunitng?access? Looking for day hunts not camping hunt.
2. Which unit would be the best public hunting in the second season?
3. Have any of these ubits experienced a high winter kill or disease that should be avoided this year?
Any other feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Mike

Mike welcome to BGH ! First of all I do not know anything about units 35 and 36 other than being great units for a big buck , I do know some about units 41 and 421.

1) Units 41, 42, and 421 has tons of public land to hunt on and access is very good.

2) I have hunted units 41 and 42 but always during 3rd season. During 2nd season I would hunt up in the higher elevations unless we get a lot of weather.

3) As far as the winter kill units 35, 36, and 45 had almost a 30 percent decline. Units 41, 42, and 421 had a 26 percent decline.

Both units hold some great deer and I would think that the tag for units 41, 42, and 421 would be a less expensive tag. Good luck and good hunting !

One other thing, if you buy a private land only tag you can't hunt on public land. A landowner preference tag is different and would allow you to hunt on public land (that's my understanding, at least).

I generally wouldn't hunt second season, no matter what. 35,36 has the least amount of pressure, but the Grand Mesa units have more animals.
I still don't know what you're trying to do with the landowner tag.

I have hunted both of these areas in the past, so feel free to PM me and we can discuss in more detail, but I'll give you a quick genearal response to your questions.....I hunt 35 and it has lots of public ground, the private you will have to pay coin, bu tthe fringes and the deep canyons can hold nice bucks. That being said, the winter kill the last two years has been enough to cut the tags in half. Last year we saw very few deer in comparison to the past 5-6 yrs. Day hunts or just staying close to roads will only get you so much. Unit 421 south of Colbran was an elk hunt for us about 4 yrs ago and we saw lots of bucks. Nothing big, just your standard forky's, 3's and some 4's, but they were pretty reasonably accesible for day hunts. I'm not to sure what the winter kill was like in that area, but for second season, this would be the area I would chose. A little more elevation there than 35 except for the crystal peak wilderness, which is not really accesible for "day" hunts. Unit 36 gives you a better chance I think during 2nd season, but not as familiar with it. 35 is primarily a winter area.

Hello all,

Thanks for the assistance and hospitality. All your feedback is quite helpful as this would be my first time hunting CO.

The landowner tag that I'm thinking of purchasing allows me to hunt within the given unit and isn't limited to the landowner land. In most cases the landowners dont have large parcels of land so your basically buying a tag for a unit without using your points.

I normally would have selected the 3rd season but it's full moon. I try to avoid the full moon at all cost when hunting deer.
