CO unit 44/45

Hi all, I was wondering if any one has ever hunted Unit 44 or 45.  I've been a long time lurker and  don't post very often but thought I might ask for a little help.  I picked up an 1st season cow tag to try a new area this year and most of my scouting hasn't really turned up any good areas.   I'm primarly focusing on unit 45. Last year was my first year elk hunting and I hunted unit 37/371, got into elk most days during archery season but just couldn't close the deal.  Anyways, I'm heading back out the next couple weekends to scout some more and any help would be greatly appreciated?

you'll do well there

There's a couple of guys here who hunt 44 regularly, but I can maybe address 45.  What do you want to know exactly?  There's certainly some similarities with that unit and 371 in terms of the terrain and amount of wilderness.  If you got into elk regularly in 371, you should have no problem with 45.

Last year I hunted archery

Last year I hunted archery season and found most of the elk right at or just below treeline in 371.  I looked at some of these area in 45 and haven't been coming up with much.  Just wondering if during 1st rifle if I should be looking lower. I've been scouting mainly dark timber (grouse mtn) since that is where I found most the elk in 371 but these areas haven't been panning out and was wondering if I should be looking at more open areas like the north side of battle mountain.

I think you're in a good area but....

Given what I've seen in my scouting and hunting this year, I think the elk are mostly right at timberline right now.  Certainly will be some pockets lower.  Might try some of the larger drainages in the Holy Cross Wilderness.
