So, I drew my 3rd choice for deer in CO, which is an archery tag in unit 29. I know ahead of time that I will probably be pressured more by non-hunters than hunters, but I felt this tag was better than no tag. Anyway, does anybody have any experience with this area (hunting or not, elk, deer, archery, rifle, muzzleloader, etc.)? I should be able to check out the area a few times between now and August. Any information at all is appreciated.

I have never hunted unit 29, but I read an article in Rocky Mountain Game and Fish a few years back where a guy got a huge non typical mulie with his bow in that unit. I think it was on public land, and the deer scored in the 200's. I'll see if I can find the article. Here is a picture of a nice non typical that was in the yard of a guy I was doing work for in Boulder. There are some brutes that slip out of tree huggers property onto Public land once in a while.

Here's a picture of that guy (Bill Janowsky) that arrowed that non typical I mentioned in article. He got it in unit 29 northwest of Boulder on public land. Thought maybe pic would get your blood pumping!

That is an even more impressive deer, and it does get my blood pumping! Despite these two great bucks, if I even get a shot opportunity on a deer this season, I do not think I will hold out to try to find one like this. I will definitely dream about it though. Thanks again for responding!
That is a cool-looking deer! Did the guy you were working for take this picture, or were you there to see this deer in person? Since the picture was taken in someone's back yard, I imagine the photographer was not more than 15 yards from this deer, which would be a great proximity to be come archery season. It is great to know that there are some big boys in this unit. Thanks for responding!
I took that picture. There was a couple of does with him, and another small buck. I told the owner if he dropped his sheds in his yard I wanted them. LOL! My advice would be, if you can find a way to access the foothills just West of Boulder somehow, that would give you an excellent chance at a good buck.
That is cool that you were able to get a picture of that buck. I take it the buck must not have dropped his sheds in that guys yard or he kept the sheds for himself? I think I about have maps rounded up for this area with several of them showing land ownership for the unit. I will study them out and see if I can find some public ground in the foothills west of Boulder.
It definitely is an anti-hunting area. I think I got a scowl today from the forest ranger lady at the Boulder Ranger District today while I was getting some maps when I told her I was hunting that area this fall. It might have been my imagination, but she seemed a bit short for the rest of the conversation after she found out I was planning a hunt.
Anybody else have any experience/info regarding Unit 29?

So, I drove around in Unit 29 a little last night after work. On the plus side, I did see two deer (both does) near Gross Reservoir. Unfortunately, they were both on no-hunting property (Boulder Water and City of Denver respectively). After taking a few more drives, I want to identify a few places to hike between now and the start of the archery season. Hopefully I can find something I like.
