Co elk hunting, need bear spray?

I will be hunting 1st season rifle for elk this season.  Will I need bear spray in the backcountry? Does anyone carry spray?  I am only asking because I ran into a huge blackbear yesterday within a half hour of a scouting trip.  It was no small bear.

Bear defense !!

Remington742,

There is nothing wrong with having something with you in case of a situation. I have grown up here in the western slope of Colorado and have had many, many run ins with bears. I rarely carry anything with me, but you never know when that .09 percent of something bad happening is going to happen. My brother and I had a "BIG" blacky come in behind us while we were calling in several elk a couple years ago. That was pretty tense !

Pick up some spray if it makes you feel more comfortable and just enjoy your elk hunt.

I myself have never carried

I myself have never carried bear spray either but see no harm if you don't mind carrying it around. Unlike others though I rarely see any bears in the area I hunt, At the most one every 3 years or so. I see more on the highway drivong to work than anywhere else. Since the probability is low I think I would feel just fine being protected with the rifle I was carrying since it will be close at hand anyway.

Just out of curiosity you said you scouted recently but most of your questions sound like you are new to the area or colorado itself? Great questions by the way but I was just wondering.

Yes, I moved to Co last Feb.

Yes, I moved to Co last Feb.  I could not apply for a resident license last year.  I did manage to draw elk and mule deer this year.  I wanted to check out the units but the snow is still too much.  The bear was walking in the snow about 60 yards from us.  It never ran, just walked off the opposite direction.  Our wind was blowing right at it.  I am sure it winded us and just decided to walk away.
