CO 3rd Season Elk Hunt

Hey Guys -

This season has snuck up on me and I purchased an OTC bull tag for unit 6 near Walden. I was told by the guy at Sports Authority that I can hunt in sections 6, 16, 17, 161, 171. Last year I hunted 7&8 and it was pretty good. Anyone have ideas where to start and where might be a good place to get out and scout before I get up there for hunting.

VERY much appreciated! Thanks!

I don't have the slightest

I don't have the slightest idea of what to tell you since I have never hunted there and the hunt starts in 2 days so here is my suggestion.  If there is snow in the area I'ld get up into it and hunt the edges of the dark timber next to open meadows where they feed.  If no snow you may need to go higher and hunt the timber and meadows to find them.

Good luck

161

I have hunted 161 for many many many years.  I can give you some advice.   If the snow falls then you'll see a bunch of hunters on the road around Independance mountain.  They are trying to catch the elk that cross in the night.  The elk usually will come off the Zirkel wilderness area and migrate lower.  They will be pushed over independance mountain.  My advice is get on top of independace mountain and wait for them to get pushed over.  If the snow doesn't fall then I would hunt west of the road that heads to Pearl and get high and walk the timber a little.  Best of luck.

There has been quite a lot of

There has been quite a lot of logging going on in some of those units over the last couple years. There was definitely some big sections that got logged this summer. Some of these openings can be really good to set up on. I have sat over recently logged sections of timber in both mornings and evenings and had some pretty good success. I know some people that avoid them like the plague because they think that all the activity going on would keep the animals from coming back. Well I got news for you... I saw a big bull over the summer standing on the edge of a recently logged cut while there were chain saws running not 400 yards from him. Good luck on your hunt and keep us posted on how everything turns out.

Well how did you do?

Well how did you do? Hopefully you got a either sex tag so if all else fails you could harvest a cow and put some meat in the freezer.
