Close Encounters!

Wow - here it is December in the south and we do not see this very often!

I was on I-20 this morning and there was a tall hill beside the Interstate - I was going 70 mph + so it happened real quickly...

I good sized doe came skidding down the hill and I thought, uh-oh, I am gonna hit her... at the botton of the hill she slammed on the binders and started running beside the road... and down the hill in second place comes YOU KNOW WHO!

A good 120" buck in full steam and hot on her tail.

I got one good look at him sliding down the hill and then I zipped past.

We rarely see bucks chasing this late... and this was at 10 am.

Maybe I stopped hunting a little too early!

I have the Thursday and Friday before Christmas and then I am done for sure.

Good luck!

Good luck out there.

Nice to know that there is still a nice buck walking around this late in the season.

Go get him!

What he means is get off the computer and go get him so he can close the gap! lol

Jim, I've seen bucks chasing does on into Feb while I have been squirrel hunting. As long as there is a doe to be breed, there'll be a buck not far behind. He may be a half-day or day later, but he'll find her eventually.

Thursday and Friday off, I'd be in the woods because you can't kill a buck if you're sitting in the recliner, that's for sure.

I hear you MIke... but I am

I hear you MIke... but I am sick now... and tired too... being in the tree does not even sound good right now, particularly in light of the fact that our season is (typically) very slow now.

There are exceptions, no doubt - but they are just that.... exceptions!

As for the contest being wrapped up - I think it is way too early to say that.

My strategy was flawed - I did not know about the 50K point limit for stories and tips early on... all it would take now is for one of the top contenders to have taken advantage of the daily limits and for them to still have 10-12K worth of story and tip points - they could pass me in one day and there would be nothing I could do about it.

That is how Ed caught me... I was helpless to stop him...

This last week should be interesting and then - win or lose - I am ready for a break.

Good luck to all...I have seen some wonderfully written work this month and BGH is all the better for it.

Jim

Well, maybe it's that cold

Well, maybe it's that cold spell you guys have been getting lately.  It's driving them a little nutty.

Sounds like a pretty close

Sounds like a pretty close call. I am sure that it got your heart pumping for sure. Well good luck if you can get out there and chase them one more time Jim. I hope you nail a big one. I had a close call of my own while antelope hunting in Wyoming this year. I was leading the way to camp and was going down a very steep hill in a canyon. Both sides of the road are lined in very thick scrubs. You can not see into them at all. I was cruising down the hill when all of a sudden, does shoot out across in front of me. There was no time to do anything. Then before I knew it, there was a doe flying through the air in front of me. It looked like she was litteraly feet in front of the windshield and over the hood. She seriously jumped over my truck's hood. It was insane! I just wish there was someone in the truck to witness it with me.

go figure

Well, sure sounds like a doe that wasn't bred first time around. That could make for some good hunting for those who hunt (rather than drive that area! lol). I was going to hunt today, but I'm still bushed from our 5 day family trip to the mountains. It was a great time, but wore my old butt out, apparently!

I'll look to hunt Monday after Christmas and it's open until 9 Jan in Tennessee. We also still have bow season open in Kentucky as well til mid January.

Best of luck to all still chasing!  Thumbs up

Hmmm I-20 not that far away

Hmmm I-20 not that far away to the north and we don't even start seeing does being chased until late december with the full effects not starting until mid january with best time early to mid feburary.

Amazing how different the times for the rut are even within just a few miles apart or a few hundred in this case.
