Clinton says Pakistan abdicating to the Taliban

From the article:
Pakistan's government has abdicated to the Taliban in agreeing to impose Islamic law in the Swat valley and the country now poses a "mortal threat" to the world, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Wednesday.

Surging violence across Pakistan and the spread of Taliban influence through its northwest are reviving concerns about the stability of the nuclear-armed country, an important U.S. ally vital to efforts to stabilize neighboring Afghanistan.

This was discussed here on a thread a few weeks ago. We speculated if Obama is strong enough to deal with a nuclear power controlled by terrorists. Given his alread Jimmy Carter-esque way of dealing with this part of the world I for one believe this is a serious problem that could be made worse by a weak and naive administration.

Only serious problem this admin has is how to be the only party in a two party system.

Ah, yes, Mr. Chavez...how much rosier things would be if we could just make the opposition go away.

But while Obama is worrying about domestic opposition, rich people and cooking up right wing extremist conspiracies, he has yet to demonstrate anything but embarrassing weakness on the international stage.

Sure, he took on a drifting lifeboat containing four third-world pirates. But Kim Jong Il made a fool out of him with the missile launch, Ahmadinejad's wiping the floor with him, Chavez thinks he's his new BFF, he embraced the racist president of Brazil as "my man," bowed to the Saudi King, failed miserably to get anything out of NATO for Afghanistan, lost an important airbase in Kyrgyzstan, and will no doubt now fritter and fret about the possibility of nukes in the hands of the Taliban.

He doesn't seem to have a problem with Iran getting nukes, so why should he care if the Taliban gets them?

Yup, quite a world compared to eight years ago. Hard to imagine things could be so messed up in eight little years. What went wrong with that Russian romance? I thought GW looked into Putty Pute's eyes and saw his soul? Now Puty has us over a barrel? Sure am glad we did all that yelling at N Korea, that sure solved a lot. NATO allies ready to back us up militarily in a heartbeat... not.

Similarly ranting at Iran and calling them an axis of evil while invading their worst enemy sure did set them back. Better whip up another coalition of the bought, oops, no money left.

Foreign.... Relations.....Disaster... of eight years, what a joke. Whig party..Who's the first to jail?

Once again his head goes back under the blanket. He ignores reality and blames Bush for everything from acne to Armageddon! You folks are in power now Civet and the buck is now stopping at your door. Not ours. George Bush is back in Texas and the responsibility belongs to your party. You can't blame GW for ever. Eventually the incompetence will catch up with you.

Guess we'll find out soon if Obama and Clinton sit on their hands and hope it all just goes away.

Maybe Obama will go talk to the Taliban. That should work, don't you think?

So just how long do you think America will put up with Dems invoking the Bush boogeyman whenever they start feeling political heat?

Your knowledge of international relations is painfully limited, Civet. I could write pages to respond to that tripe, but I'll stick with Afghanistan for the moment.

Under Bush, we transferred a huge amount of authority in Afghanistan to NATO. Since taking command of the International Security Assistance Force in 2003, NATO's troop presence in Afghanistan has risen from 5,000 troops around Kabul to 50,000 around the country. Those troops come from 41 countries, including all 26 NATO members. Mind you, these are countries that weren't attacked on 9/11. Most of them are committing their forces out of belief in the mission, not as a matter of national survival.

Overall, the following countries have had troops die in Afghanistan: the US, Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, and the UK. In recent years, some of those countries have seen their casualty rates acccelerating faster than ours have.

The international community has really stepped up to the plate in Afghanistan -- and most of them didn't have to.

So imagine their reaction when newcomer Obama introduced himself to them by accusing them of not doing enough in Afghanistan and saying they needed to put their troops in harm's way more. That's like being sued by the guy you pulled out of a burning car because you didn't grab his iPod as well. That's how you say thanks? Screw you, buddy.

Foreign relations disaster? Just let Obama's foreign policy (or lack thereof) percolate awhile, and you're going to see some real ugly stuff happening. America has been the most powerful nation on Earth for decades -- if we step out of the driver's seat and take a seat at the back of the bus, there's going to be a lot of people grabbing for the wheel.
