I personally am not a fan of the hogue stocks on the rugers and dont like the the encores, so it would have to be the savage. Now if you were talking about a ruger with a wood stock it would definately be my #1 choice
I would have to go with a savage. I have owned one and loved it. Good price and durable guns. A lot of police and military personel us savages as "sniper rifles" I think thompsons are way over priced and so are the parts and barrels for them! and I think ruger makes a good rifle but i like savage better ( just personal I guess)
If you're lucky enough to be on private land and can leave your stand up during the off season you can tie an old piece of cloth or something of the sort to your stand. I like to use an old camo bandana that I have. That way the deer get used to the movement and eventually don't bother even looking up when there is slight movement. This may just give you the time to draw your bow or raise your gun without being detected.
