WSMR Oryx

Hey Smitty, I meant to ask you.  Have you actually had a chance to hunt the oryx over on the base

2008 was a good year for us .My son-in-law and myself drew our once in a lifetime on the small missile range in january. He got a 36.5" bull that was very nice. I got a 38" cow with one horn broken about 6" off. He put in for an off range hunt and drew out one in august and got an old broken horned bull. My son drew his OIAL for January of 2009 and hunted hard to get a young 28" bull that he killed in self defience. they ran right at us from 700 yards to 40 yards when my son mad a reply about this could get bad at that time the bh cow in the lead herd him and made a 90*  turn  so he shot the 2nd one out of 7 that all looked the same.

All that took place within 12 months so one could say we had a good year at WSMR. Yes

Thanks james

That does sound like a great

That does sound like a great year.  From what I read, only the missle base is a once in a lifetime tag?  I thought they were all, on or off base, controlled by the state of NM, and were all OIAL????

how to apply?

Is there any hope of a non-resident drawing those tags?

I don't know what the exact

I don't know what the exact odds are Mike, but like I said, my friend is a CA resident and he got drawn last year.

Actually, just found this page.  Don't know what the % of non-residents is, but it list all draw success rates.

Yes we had a great year even

Yes we had a great year even if I did get the dates wrong it was 09 and 2010 not 08. They are all under state control, but only the OIAL are on base and now there is a broken horn on base that doesn't count against your OIAL. There is also 65 tags a month that are off range state wide that are available that do not go towards your OIAL.

Mike there is an orientation by the base officials/game-wardens opening morning of the hunt  and I visited with a lot out of state hunters. I was lucky when I applied I drew a tag the first year I put in, but I have a friend that has applied 27 years hand has yet to draw.It is a pure chance draw.

Thanks, nice to know.  Just

Thanks, nice to know.  Just curious, I heard my friend's tag was quite expensive.  Is that only cause he had the OIAL hunt, or are all the Oryx tags that way?

All Oryx tags on or off range

All Oryx tags on or off range are the same res. is $161 nonres. is $1630.  then you have to pay a tresspass fee to the base, I think it is $150 or so.

I visited with another hunter from Utah and mentioned how high the nonres. tag was and the way he put it to me was he thought it was fare at 10 X a res tag and that kept well below most high fence operations and still had the free range hunt.

It had gotten to be almost a guarantied hunt, but over the last 3 or 4 years they thinned em out quite a bit. I think it is still about a 75% success on the ranges that they hunt.

The one that I am trying for now is the Ibex in the Florida Mts. but a tag is a lot harder to come by, but some day Thumbs up

I have never heard of those

I have never heard of those animals.  But it sounds like it would be really fun to hunt them.

As I said yesterday in a post

As I said yesterday in a post though, it will be interesting to see what the participation is if it's not a $1000+ rifle.  Some guys actually lived on here, just to get first place.
