Re: Chickens

I let the little chicken nuggets out on the lawn today without any sort of confinement for the first time. I put the dogs away in order to do so and let them out on leash one at a time, then unleashed them around the chickens. All birds are present and accounted for(17 total).

Anyway, the little buggers are growing fast and starting to look like real chickens. The big gold and black ones(Gold Laced Wyandottes) are about 6 weeks, the rest are closer to 5 weeks.

The barn is a few weeks away from being completed. The chicken coop will be built into the barn, essentially as an extra horse stall (about 1,200 square feet, and two stories for the whole barn, about 120 square feet for the chicken coop). We're still about 4 months out from getting eggs. I don't think any of the birds turned out to be roosters, just hens from what I can tell so far.

With that brood running around you won't have to worry too much about bugs in the lawn or around the house. About the only thing that you'll need to worry about is getting rid of all the eggs.

That's a good problem to have. Most of my neighbors use an egg broker to sell their excess ( a couple of them have over 30 birds in their flocks).
