Well my wife and i had to cut our annual week long family camping trip short this year. We left last sunday and were planning on coming home today. However our youngest son(4) broke his ankle while playing at the park at the camp ground (we think?) So all of Monday he was complaining of his "feet hurting" us not knowing what he had done yet told him to keep walking and tough it out as we were on a small hike. He wieghts 58lbs and is hard to carry for long periods of time. Well by Monday night he couldnt put any weight on it and was complaining more so we gave him some IBprophen for kids and put him to bed. The next morning he was still in pain and couldnt put any weight on it so i pulled up his pant leg and his little ankle was swollen and purple, so i got dressed and took him into Redmond for some x-rays, turns out he broke it right on his growth plate. The DR formed a splint for him and drugged him up, He also told us not to let him walk on it anymore. So we went back to camp and my son was mad his trip was over, Let me tell you how hard it is to keep a 4 yr old still, its darn near impossible. Then wednesday I went for a little hike and stepped on a rattle snake and almost got bit. that was a little hair raising. Then wednesday night found some head lice in our daughters hair. we were up for 6 hours from 8pm till 2am combing that crap out of her head after treating her. Thursday we packed up and came home since our son had an appt to see an orthopedics early on friday morning. He got a walking cast and he thinks its the coolest thing in the world right now, he hasnt complained of pain since tuesday night. Then later friday and all of Saturday was spent treating our house to kill any lice that may have been there. I hope i never have to deal with that again. All in all it was still fun we made the best of he situation it was just not as relaxing as it should have been.

Wow!! That's quite a list of bad events but I bet it will be one of the camping trips you remember most years from now. At least nothing really bad came out of it and you were able to get some enjoyment for your time off.
Sounds like you need to get back out into the real back country where it's safer.lol

Thanks Goose. He gets his cast off next thursday(15th) He cant wait, and I dont blame him. Its hard to keep a 4yr old at bay with a broken ankle. I hope my hunting trip next week isnt as eventfull other than me or my brother arrowing either a good buck or bull.

This made me belly laugh...sorry
I know this thread is a bit old, but when I read it I laughed out loud!
It sounds an awful lot like a camping trip we took a couple years ago. Trade your son's ankle for my wife's arm/wrist, the lice for ticks and add in locking the keys in the truck at a trailhead and breaking a fishing rod and you've got our chaotic camping trip.
The first day I lock the keys in the truck at a trailhead--left them in my coat pocket. No cell service, no way to easily break in, and miles from camp....Geez! A friendly stranger, a car ride and an expensive emergency locksmith visit and we were on our way back to camp. Second day I find a tick on the back of my son's head. We go over everybody and find 3 more ticks. Go fishing later the second day, daughter falls into the river/creek and breaks her fishing rod. Fortunately, nobody gets hurt too bad and after we get her dried off everybody's OK. Then on the 3rd day the wife gets bucked off a tempermental trail horse, faceplants in the mud and breaks her arm. That's kind of a show stopper there, but we stayed another night after that too. I was pretty releived to get home without a car accident.
We've camped again since then and not had any issues. Not sure why everything fell apart on that trip, but I hope we don't get to experience another trip like that again!
Again, sorry for laughing, but your trip just hit a little too close to home.

I'd laugh too
Sounds like you had a good time as well. We go on this family trip every year and this was the first time we had any problems. I hope future trips go smooth, This one was pretty bad. we still had fun when it was all said and done but I was ready to go home when we left. My son was a trooper and is cast free now, and my daughter survived the lice infestation and is better now, I told her if she gets it again I'm shaving her head though. It would be one thing to deal with it at home but camping and picking out lice at 2am with just lanttern light was pretty dumb.
