Changed my mind. CO unit 62

So after I got some huge help from everyone here, I got further into my research and changed my mind on which unit I think we will go for this year. We have 3 non resident pp and we want a unit that takes 3 pp to draw, and a unit that is in the far west side of the state as we will be coming from Utah. (3rd rifle season) We aren't going for the monster of the mountain. We just want a good quility hunt where there are good numbers of deer and we have some good chances on some 140-170 class bucks.

I have read a lot about unit 62 and I see pros and cons. Cons are; lots of people, deep canyons, lots of bears, and lots of roads. Pros; deep canyons to get away from the lazy man, large unit. I like the terrain a lot. We will hike wherever we need to get away from the crowds.

Does anybody have any experience on this unit? When is the rut heavy in this area? And considering our pp and what we are looking for in our hunt, does anyone have suggestions on units other than 62?

Unit 62

czterryteam,

The rut typically will start around the 3rd week in November, but early rutting activity will start around the first week of November. One other con not mentioned is the mountain lion study and the very few mountain lion tags they give out for the unit. Between the amount of bears, mountain lions, coyotes and the winter of 07/08 the deer have had a very rough come back in 62 and 61.

As far as getting away from lazy hunters, it can be tough, just because the bulk of the hunters in the unit are lifers like me and you  will find people where you would not imagine. Especially due to guys that like to sneek into areas that are closed with there atv's.

This unit "IS" one of the most heavily hunted units in all of Colorado and both 2nd and 3rd season puts the words "orange army" into a whole new meaning.

Good luck with your decision.

Quinton

wow

Wow! interesting info. For a good hunt with good opportunity and good bucks (not the monsters) what units would you suggest that 3 pp can draw?

Unit 62

Unit 62 in my opinion is a great unit to hunt.  I took my first elk in this unit, a nice 6x6 that found himself on the wrong side of the road that morning, lucky me, but when it comes to luck, i seem to either have it or just hunt harder than my hunting buddies.  It took thirteen years to draw my deer tag for unit 61 last year,(3rd rifle hunt in Nov, 2010) and i did manage to take a very nice 185" muley on the 3rd day of the hunt, but up to the point of me taking this buck, I didnt see a mule deer only Bears, and lots of them, BIG BEARS! scared the heck out of me! Had one so close, i could see snot dripping from his nose! Damn thing had no legs, all bear!  I will give you some info on unit 61 if your interested, email me airsco@yahoo.com
