Newbie first post, thinking about taking my son Mule deer hunting in the Challis area. I have only hunted in Northern Idaho ( Whitetail on our ranch) Wondering if anyone has a suggestion for a good area to hunt. Thanks Domenic
I have seen several good bucks up there. My wife took a 3x3 up there this year. There is a spot of there that has a sure thing. I usually take my wife up there. She just started hunting so is easy for her.
If you get up that way then go check out the Bed and breakfast North of Challis on the highway as he has a huge collection of mounted heads from mule deer. Big collection and he advertises it with a sign out front.
I would look elsewhere if it where me. Between the wolves and the ever growing elk herd, the deer hunting around Challis has gotten pretty poor. It also gets very crowded, which takes away fromthe quality of the hunt.
The B&B mentioned contains about 95% of heads purchased from other hunters. The limited entry hunts in Idaho are all good as are the wilderness hunts.
I learned this the hard way last year. If you're hunting in an area with lots of bear activity, it's a great idea to stash your food and water up in a tree. I like to wrap everything in a tarp and tie it between two trees. Don't just tie it up in one tree but tie it in between two trees at least 15 feet in the air. I thought I had my backpacking camp's food supply stashed pretty well last year. I returned to camp during the first weekend of archery to find all my food destroyed. Make sure...
