casting bullet's

I've been doing my own handgun bullet's for a lot of years. Not real serious but just to shoot them inexpensively. Love shooting them! Well I have an old 30-06 made by Paul Jaeger that about a year or so ago I gave a lot of though to having re-bored to 338-06. In the end I couldn't bring myself to do it. I don't shoot it a whole lot mostly because it has more reciol than I want to deal with, but by no means bad.

I've got probably two life time's supply of lead out in the shop, some in inget's and a whole bunch raw, wheel weight's and pure sheet lead. So yesterday I got on the phone to Midway and ordered some Lee stuff to cast 180gr bullet's for it and got a 1000 gas checks to boot. I've got a lyman 450 sizer but no dies or top punch's for the 30 cal bullet. I used a Lee mould for handgun bullet's years ago and decided to try it and their sizing system again.

Anybody elas cast bullet's here? This works I'm gonna see about a valley blacktail tag next year and get one with a cast bullet.

I cast but like you mostly for handguns 40,44,an 45s ,have been getting into the rifle end a bit more the last couple years . 35 Rem 45/70 ,light 30, for plinkers ,but have had pretty good results so am working on a heavier 30 cal ,6.5 ,and 375. My problem is finding what I want , Have the molds for 6.5 an 375 and have some bullets sitting here but my lee sizers are on back order an no idea when they will show up.And i'm still up in the air about what 30 design to try. One thing I have decided any bullet I might push at all will be of the GC style.I know the prices have gone up but they still seem pretty reasonable .good luck with the new venture .Hope you find a load that shoots one hole.Alex

Well have shot a bunch of them now. 180gr RN w/gas checks. The Lee mould pours what looks to me like a nice bullet and the sizer is slick. Using the Lee liquid lube you have to wait for the lub to dry but not even a hint of leading.

12gr Red Dot with this bullet is like shooting a 22LR and at 50yds very accurate. Have group's from IMR3031 and 4064 shooting under 1/2" at 50 yds. Loaded up some last night and going to move it to 100yds. Did a few with 3031 and well under 2" group's. Think it will do better. It was cold and windy and I wasn't shooting that well.

If I were to stick with the Red Dot load, I have a 12# can of the stuff. At 12 grs per round thats 7000 rounds of 30-06 ammo. Down side if the velocity is somewhere around 1500fps. Bet it will kill a deer plenty well!

I have found that going over about 22,000 lbs pressure does start robbing the accuracy. Maybe by going farther it return's, Don't know and right now don't care, this is a hoot!!!

Been going out every day or so shooting these things and they are starting to look up. Using mostly 4064 now and 30grs has me at about 1 1/2" at 100yds, never thought it would do that. Got 5 in one group today that took out a hole about 3/4" at 100yds! Also tried going up to see if they would lead or not. One grain increment's up to 36 grs and not a sign of leading. At 36grs I also got over 1900fps from the 180gr bullet. Want to try to get up to 2200fps and might switch back to 3031 as it gives a bit higher velocity with the same powder chg.

Day befor yesterday I was out casting and the pot was down about half way. Dropped in some wax to flux with and started stirring with an old spoon and the stuff self ignited. Not like it doesn't do that everytime the pot get's down and it does make me jump every timd. Well this time I jumped and managed to splash lead on the underside of my left wrist, about 1 1/2" X 2"; nice round edges! Didn't burn to bad but big burn spot now. What a dumb a$$!!!

Next mold and dies will be for 6.5 for my 6.5x55.

Have been playing with the 35 and 223 , so far only reduced loads.hope to wack some hares with the 223, an just trying to get a feel for the 35, still no sizer for the 6.5 or 375 so tried the 375 without being sized, not good, on a better note the 444 just loves the 310 GC bullets , did't measure but just one big hole at 50 yrds.
Glad to hear your having fun with it ,be careful of the tinsel fairy her breath is hot and she leave marks.
